Aside from being a little annoying what is the problem with restating, it's a simple fix.
My Brother, the family computer guru and Microsoft graduate (he retired from the company at 38) once told me if a computer develops a glitch or freezes just turn it off, pull the plug, etc, then turn it back on. Often times the reboot process will set everything back in order. I have used his advice many times, it has a high success rate.

Agreed, but you have to be careful with that. If the computer is in the middle of an I/O disk operation, you can corrupt the allocation table on the disk, which may be impossible to recover. As a minimum, make absolutely sure the disk access light is off.

I have SyncBackSE set to backup files to an external drive, G. If I have other external devices connected during the day, they will use the letter G and maybe H and I. Sometimes, ejecting the devices doesn't give me the G back, so I can't do a backup without restarting the computer.

I'll go to Disk Management to change the drive letter, and my choices will be A, B, K, L, etc. Is there a simple way to get back a missing letter, rather than restarting the computer?

Why can't you keep the G drive connected?

It's connected, but it's seldom turned on because it's just for backup every couple of days. After rebooting, I was still missing the letter G, so I renamed the drive X and changed the seven destination folders in SyncBack to X. I wonder why G is no longer available on the computer.

You know, just because you have superior equipment, that doesn't give you the right to gloat.

I also use a Mac occasionally, and it's interesting how they avoid the use of drive letters.

I found my G. For some reason, Windows assigned one of my optical drives the letter G, probably after an update. I've never had that happen before.

Finding the 'G spot' can be very tricky, or so I've been told. I use linux, don't use drive letters. Mac OS is derived from linux.

Have small portable drives that are used for backups etc. via USB cable. Somehow, at this point can't recall how, but I named them. For example , one is 'Seagate backup drive'. No matter where it is plugged in it shows up as Seagate backup drive. Sorry I can't provide step by step guidance.

Mac OS X and Linux are both based on Unix which was developed at Bell Labs in the 1970s.

'Linux began in 1991 as a personal project by Finnish student Linus Torvalds' (wikipedia) and 'macOS is based on the Unix operating system and on technologies developed between 1985 and 1997 at NeXT, a company that Apple co-founder Steve Jobs created after leaving Apple in 1985' (wikipedia).

What you want to do to assign a "permanent" drive letter is described in this web page. In short, you use a letter towards the end of the alphabet for drives that you want to always have the same letter. That is what I do for all of the drives I use for backups and drives that show up as empty unless an SD card is inserted. My Dell monitor has a SD card slot and always shows as a drive even if a card is not inserted.

This works because Windows assigns drive letters in alphabetical order and does not release them until a restart.

I agree. Pick a letter toward the end of the alphabet to assign to the drive and change the sync settings. There is also a setting to make empty drives visible.

Because it is still assigned to a drive as far as the operating system is concerned!!!!

I renamed my two externals X. I backup to one and then the other, so only one is active at a time. That makes it simpler to setup and use SyncBack.
