Depending upon the use case, you may find the Panasonic FZ-1000II appealing.
A comparison of both can be found at:

I’m curious...what would be a reason that these higher priced cameras would be in the “used” category?
Is it safe to assume they were merely traded in for an upgrade? Or could other reasons apply.
How safe is it to spend big bucks on used equipment vs. a few more bucks for the safety of new and the warranties that come with them?

Do not be afraid to buy used...I have 8 DSLR's and 6 have been "pre-Owned" and are remarkably good!! (I'm kinda a gear freak/nut and like to try various combo's). Both B&H and Adorama offer good warranties and return policies so you would be almost 100% protected when purchasing from them. As to why people exchange/trade-in...I imagine it is mostly upgrades. All used camera's sold by the above co.'s are thoroughly checked and warranted and rated according to quality. You would be safe buying from them and if you are not happy, get a free return/refund in thirty days...or whatever their return policy is.

Ive had 4 top end full frame cameras 2 canon and 2 nikon together with top lenses. I bought the best lenses for them etc but eventually became sick of changing lenses and the general weight of lugging them around.
I bought the rx10m4 and havnt looked back.....superb image quality, manageable weight and for my kind of photography......mainly spur of the moment travel shots.....its been incredible. I take better shots now than before and generally more keepers without any discernable difference in image quality.
A 24-70 plus a full frame will probably give better night/low light shots but the rx10m4 certainly isnt bad at all upto iso 3200 from a noise point of view.
If your in any doubt I always think Flickr is a good starting point to see how a camera fairs in the real world.
Most of my recent shots on flickr have been taken with the rx10m4.

I also am interested in the Sony RX IV or perhaps the III. I have always been a Sony user and currently have the Sony DSC-HX50V that I am totally disappointed with as I have missed some great photos of my active grandchildren due to focusing issues, probably some of which is my fault. Even with this disappointment, I still want to upgrade to the Sony RX series. Living in a rural area it is difficult to get to a shop that has one that I can pick up and sense how it feels in my petite hands. Id rather not order one and hope it feels right in my grasp. So, until then, I will await my purchase of the RX series. If there is something of equal quality out there, I’d really like to do research and hear comments to compare.

Judy, I think you’d be happier with the RX10iv if you make the leap. It has phase detect focusing versus contrast on the iii. It’s a big improvement especially in lower light and is faster.

The Panasonic Lumix FZ-2500 is rated extremely well, also; in some internet articles it rates on a par with the Sony. I bought a used one for $300 on eBay ( compare that to see the prices of the Sony, and assign your own value analysis to figure out which one to buy )

An extraordinary camera. With a 1" sensor no match for aps-c or FF in low light or noise, but, still a wonderful all in one solution for virtually everything else. Here are some recent examples:

I purchased mine in July 2017 for a river cruise - tired of lugging two Canon DSLR's, lenses, ...
I have abandoned the DSLR's & lenses and use it exclusively for my photography.
It does take a while to learn Sony's menu system.
I highly recommend it, but give yourself some time to learn its nuances. Sony is different.

Here's a very recent image - 70 yards away was this rare Night Heron during daylight.

The lens is the same but I agree completely about the AF. That was why I sold my III and bought the IV.

I have the m3. It is great! The model 4 also looks good. Sony is a little different with the menus and such but is a good camera. I got tired of lugging around a dslr with lenses. I tried the fz1000. I didn’t like the soft focus and other things. For example the f stop only goes to f8 on the small end which isn’t too good for depth of field if you are trying to utilize what you can do for certain photos. So I bought the RX10 M3. Great camera! Don’t need to carry around all the gear. It is a little pricey but worth it!
have fun!

If I could only have 1 camera this would be the one.
The "one inch" sensor is too small to compete with the high-end cameras - mirrorless and DSLR but the ergonomics make up for that.
If you have any doubt, rent one.
You will see lot's of comments here from those who have one and also on the internet. But see for yourself. That is why I own one - I rented it first.

A friend asked me to recommend a multi-lens DSLR system to replace her bargain P&S. I advised she (a Full Auto shooter) would be happier with the SONY RX10 m4. She bought one a year ago and outshoots me every time. My daughter a Canon 7Dii shooter recently followed suit and says she's glad she did. I'm planning to offload a bunch of DSLR equipment soon and follow suit.

I have the original RX-10, and still use it over the six bodies I have purchased and sold since! The photos above by phlash46 and markngolf show how fantastic the performance of that camera can be. Anyone who doubts the 1" Sony sensor has never owned one.

I love my RX 10 IV. Sold my other cameras. I've been a budget camera person, bought used or entry level models (mostly Sony), and when a friend handed me her RX 10 iii, I decided then and there to save up and buy one. By that time, the RX IV arrived. as a 65-year-old woman, I really appreciate its lighter weight and utter ease for 600mm reach. I admit I still use auto mostly, and get good pics, but this camera has many many ways to customize. If you take the plunge and buy this, also invest in a book or two so you can learn and grow.
