jeobrien46 I would think that the depth of fielt with the 50mm (giving you in reality 75 mm after crop is taken into consideration) f/1.8 is more shallow than on the 35 mm and you get better bokah. Do you find the 50mm better than the 35mm for portrait

Howie... the D40 was the dslr that drew most of it's following from the point and shoot crowd because it was so easy to use and rendered very good pics without any fuss in auto mode.. as the user progressed in proficiency he (she) had the ability to move to more advanced auto features along with manual. Almost immediately after releasing the 6mp D40 Nikon released the D40X at 10 MP which then became the D60. The D40 is a great beginners camera, especially if you put on the 18-105mm AF-S lens. I just sold my D40 to a beginner and she is so impressed with the camera that she wished she had done it a long time ago... also look at the SB-400 Speedlight which is a nice companion flash and very easy to use.
GO FOR IT !!!
Ron

So, Sue, was the 18-105 lens auto focus?

Beagleman

Yes, it's an AF-S lens that will auto focus on ANY Nikon camera.

In addition to the SB400 get a the "Vivitar Heavy Duty Off-Camera Flash Shoe Cord for Nikon TTL (4')" at Amazon for $16.02. This enables you to use the flash off-camera which helps to eliminate red-eye and gives you flexibility in controlling shadows and the direction the light falls on your subject.

There is also Interfit Multi-Fit TTL Cord for Nikon/Canon/Fuji Cameras (32'/10m) for about $50.00 at B&H. This enables you to place your SB400 up to 32 Ft. away from your camera and still use Nikons TTL & TTLB (Balanced). Since the SB400 does not have wireless capability, these accessory cords can be invaluable.

Even though I also have a Nikon SB700 flash, I still use the SB400 for outdoor fill light. The output of the SB400 can be used in TTL mode or completely manual mode as long as the SB400 is wired to the camera's hotshoe. The SB400 is small enough to carry in your pants pocket.

My daughter has one, and I was so impressed I bought one for my wife. "Superb" is inadequate to describe this camera. It's simple, straightforward and works!

Well, the 35mm is really equal to the 50mm in full frame. The 35 mm allows me to shoot in smaller rooms or tighter areas. The 50 mm requires me to stand back more that I like to for portraits.

The following were shot with the Nikon 35mm f/1.8G lens.

The above photos of Amy are examples of the Nikon 35 mm f/1.8 lens for portraits. Actually, all of these shots were nearly full body shots but I frequently find that when I zoom in during post processing, I discover an absolutely beautiful face that leads me to abandon the full body shot and crop tight.

Here are a few more photos shot with the Nikon 35mm f/1.8 G lens. Even though I used my Nikon D7000, my Nikon D40 would have yielded similar results at typical magnification.

The Nikon 35 mm and 50 mm f/1.8 G are wonderful lenses and work perfectly with both the D40 and the D7000 bodies. And, y the way, the lenses are inexpensive. Probably the best value in lenses by any manufacturer.

I had a D40 until I was mugged and my gear stolen. With a 18~200 lens was a great travel camera. Some extra functions would have been nice but still a good beginner camera

I use a d-40 now for 3 yrs. I enjoy the ease of its controls. I shoot mostly jewerly in the macro mode. found that I had to get a 70-300 lens for most of my shooting. then found I enjoyed the freedom it gave me on shooting landscapes etc.

Any thoughts, I have a chance to pick up a Nikon D40 at a low price, I know it's only a 6.1 megapixel camera but I'm a beginner and I'm using a Sony P/S now, what are the pro's and con's of this camera. I do have the camera in my possession now to try it out, I like the feel, very light and the modes...well let's say I'm learning.
