Why get rid of your D850, to buy their, (overpriced) used D-850 with 20x more usage on it?? It sounds like they are trying to take money out of your pocket for no good reason. If this is the way they do business, go to B&H and never look behind you.

He went to check out a mirrorless sytem.

Visited a local camera store today; went to check out a mirrorless system. They had a pre owned Nikon D850 for sale; asking price was $2200; shutter count was over 100K. They offered me $1200 for my D850 that has just over 10K shutter actuations.

They are selling on ebay from 2200 to about 2700 depending on condition and shutter counts. Sell yours there and then buy a Nikon Z8.

Not a good deal,....maybe a "Ripoff".🤔🙄

I wouldn't call it a ripoff unless there is actual deceit involved. A bad deal is not necessarily a ripoff; it's up to the customer to consider other options, compare prices, etc.

When you know you need a mirrorless camera, you have the knowledge to succeed.

If you NEED a mirrorless camera to take a good photograph, you are not a good photographer

So, save up enough to purchase the MILC - perhaps the price will even come down in the meantime - and keep your D 850 as a backup. You don’t have to sell if you don’t like their terms.

What most people don’t understand is, that when they sell their camera or whatever they’re selling, to a dealer or a broker who will be reselling it, they generally will be offered approximately half of what the retailer expects to resell the item for. This is pretty consistent across all sorts of businesses that I have seen, including pawnshops, KEH, and other used equipment dealers.

That is the margin they need to make it worth their bother.

Part of the reason is that selling used goods is a bit like a bakery in slow motion.

When baked are hot and fresh they sell quick and for a good price. A day later and the value is halved. Past that, it becomes worthless ... quick.

Baked into the price of the fresh goods is the amount to be written down/off of the inventory that doesn’t sell right away.

Used cars, cameras, furniture etcetera don’t depreciate as fast ... but it is there and is a valid expense.

Apparently not all, including the OP. Some seemed surprised the Selling price was higher than the Buying price.

And consider if they take in the OP D850 how long does it take them to sell it. Having it on the shelves cost money because you must consider the interest on the $1200 they pay out. So I don't think they are too greedy but selling to the store is never a good deal.
