Hi Curt I have the D5 and the D850 my D5 blows the doors off of the D850 Don't let the resolution scare you my D5 is my go to camera not many differences from the new D 6 The D5 or D6 is a much higher quality Camera all my studio photo shoots mostly with my D5 my 2 cents and yes it is worth the money Mike

I kind of agree with Mike1017. My default camera is D5 for everything other than well lit, slow moving or stationary subjects, where I use my D850, which is also a fantastic camera. I love my D5 and have already ordered a D6. My assumption is that it has to be better than the D5, maybe I’m wrong, but I will take the chance.
I now have two D5 bodies for sale in preparation for the D6 arrival. DM me if interested. They are in pretty much pristine condition.

You should think about what you will be shooting. The D6 is geared toward the sports photographer. It is a great camera, but it is heavy and ruggard. If your primary shooting is landscape around America, the D850 is more than enough a camera to do that.

While this is true & the D850 may very well be my next & last camera, The D6 will prove its worth if you plan on shooting wildlife & low light which both can be at the same time. can always rent one for a day or 2 & make the decision then.
Enjoy your travels!

Those D750's have pixels close in size to the ones in the D6 (no need for the D6!), so take one of those along to back up your D850, have a blast, and send us some of the awesome photos you will take of this amazing country!

I think it's worth the price but the question is whether you need it or not.

I have a lot of money tied up in glass and don't plan to start over with a mirrorless camera. I have two D750's that are great. I am going to get a D850 soon, but I am thinking about adding a D6 to the mix. I want a camera that will bring out the best of my large glass investment. Taking a RV to shoot the USA. I earned it. Not sure it should have been called a D6, it seems more like a D5 S from what I have read. What do you think?

I own both the D5 and D850, I use the D5 for sports and low light conditions and the D850 for every thing else. The D6 has enough improvements that I feel that it is worth the upgrade but it will not be replacing the D850. I was hoping that the D6 would be the D5 and D850 combined so would only need one camera body. Depending what I am shooting most of the time I have the D850 with a 24 to 70 lens on and D5 with the 70 to 200. With bird in flight its the D5 with 200-400 and animals on the ground its the D850 with the 200-400. On the waiting list at Adorama for the D6.

Since getting into digital photography I have purchased at least four "last cameras".

Until the next one! I’ve learned enough to never say, “this is my last camera!”

Then the replacement for the D850 will be the camera to buy instead of the D6. But, since the OP already had the D850, I advised him not to get the D6.

If we don’t buy the new products, manufactures do not have incentive or believe that their R&D is worth the investment. We need to keep them in the game, otherwise, we won’t have something better than the last generation. My D5 is so much better than my old D4,D3,D2,D1. Just think, if all we had was the D1.

You have a lot of good advice above. I currently use a Nikon D810 and D7200 and am happy with what i have (for the moment).
My comment is more geared to the RV travel side.
5 years ago my wife and i sold our house, bought a 40 ft class A rv (no slide outs) and started to travel, (our plans where 2 yrs max.) After 2 yrs we traded the class A for a 40 ft 5th wheel (with 3 large slides) and are still in it, the RV life is as addicting as photography.
We had absolutly no plans except to drive wherever we wanted each morning when we got up. We have no regrets and no plans to stop yet....
Buy whatever you want, enjoy everywhere you go, spend as much time as you care to in each location.
Last year we stopped in colorado and are still here. With semi plans to sell her new car and head to Whidbey Island WA. In the late spring.
Congrats on the new RV, have a great time. And BUY whatever you want in photo equiptment.
But most of all, enjoy this time on the road, take to many pics, eat to much local foods, spend more time than expected. We have and have no regrets.

I NEVER CAN UNDERSTAND HOW MANUAL EXPOSURE IS SOMEHOW BETTER, YOU ARE USING THE SAME METER TO ADJUST MANUALLY AS THE CAMERA IS USING TO DO IT !! IF YOU SAY YOU CAN ADJUST IT DIFFERENTLY YOU CAN DO IT WITH COMP IN AUTO !! SOMEONE PLEASE STRAIGHTEN ME OUT I HAVE FELT THIS WAY A LONG TIME BUT NEVER ASKED, SO HELP ME UNDERSTAND !!
