Arizona Slot Canyons #2: Secret Antelope Canyon

This is another privately owned canyon like the one in my earlier post that is shown by only one tour company. They have both photo tours (tripods allowed) and regular tours at a reduced price. My group was the only group in the canyon at the time of my visit as they do not run back to back tours.

The canyons are washes or dry stream beds that are cut by flash floods when it rains and then further formed by high winds blowing through. If there is a chance of rain they will not run the tour because of the danger of flash flooding. Back in 1997 a 40 foot high wall of water swept through Lower Antelope and killed 11 tourists hiking in the canyon. Only the Navajo guide survived.

Great shots! The Navajos have made some changes at, I believe both the Upper and Lower Antelope Canyons that affect photographers. Do your homework and don't just expect to show up and get these gorgeous shots anymore. Your wording indicates that you were at a different location.
