The canyons are washes or dry stream beds that are cut by flash floods when it rains and then further formed by high winds blowing through. If there is a chance of rain they will not run the tour because of the danger of flash flooding. Back in 1997 a 40 foot high wall of water swept through Lower Antelope and killed 11 tourists hiking in the canyon. Only the Navajo guide survived.
