Wonderful gallery of photos and history lesson. The internal instrumentation and controls look very tightly packed. No wasted space here. Wonderful posting. Sounds like this would be the best one to tour.

Nice post subject, brought back many memories. Was closely associated with the submarine force as a Spook during the Cold War. The anxiety level was high especially when the Thresher imploded during sea trials and the Scorpion exploded because of a faulty torpedo.

My good friend was the weapons officer on the Shark, which I believe was the sister ship to the Scorpion. He and a good friend graduated from sub or nuclear power school (I’ve forgotten which) at the same time and received their ship assignments at the same ceremony. He says it was just chance that his friend got the Scorpion and he got the Shark. We have a lunch once a month with two other naval officers (I feel honored to be invited as I was Army), and one of the others was Adm. Rickover’s adjutant for many years - the Rickover stories are VERY interesting.

Good documentary, Paul, of this mysterious "thing?" - BUT
without telling us that it is a historic submarine, we would not know - from the interior only?
Happy shooting!

Great pictorial and documentary, Paul! My first sub was Amberjack (SS-522), a Tench class converted to GUPPY II and based out of Key West. She was decommissioned in Oct 73 and transferred to the Brazilian Navy as Ceara (S-12). I served on a lot of different classes of Fast Attack boats, both Nuc and modern Diesel (Barbel Class) afterwards ( I was a Navy "spook" and rode the boats on Temporary Duty assignments), but the Amberjack is my favorite memory.

I'm envious!

A Nuclear Power School was in close proximity to my Defense Language Institute school and when the Thresher incident occurred ('63) there was quite a bit of gloom over the whole area.

Looks like the Drum is in better shape than the Clamagore on the outside which needs work, although the Clamagore is nice inside. I was comparing your photos to the ones I took on the Clamagore last year, and I am jealous! Your photos of specific details are just excellent - I learned some things looking at yours - thanks!

Thank you Chris. The trip through the Drum might raise my photography tours to four of these museum subs, with some like the Cod in Cleveland being year over year return visits. I've tried different lenses and cameras to avoid just the same shots, different sub. All the details in every ship are just amazing.

Great shots Paul, Your photos nudged my memory bank. I spent 3 years aboard the U.S.S. Sea Cat (SS399) based in Key West, Florida. The Sea Cat was on it's fifth war patrol when the war ended and was present at the Japanese surrender ceremony. Sadly, the Sea Cat was made into razor blades after decommissioning. There is truly so much history in these old boats that everyone of them should be saved. Paul Best

Well done in photos and narrative.

I served on the staff of the Commander of the U.S. Atlantic Submarine Force from 1968 through 1970. Interesting time. Some of these boats were still around. I was there when the Scorpion was lost and wrote a book about the boat and its crew. Days of the SSN and SSBN. Lots of interesting men.

Proud to have served. Sometimes wish I had done more than four years. Have no regrets but I will always wonder what if.

Thanks for doing this. I always enjoy your posts.
Well done in photos and narrative. br br I served... (show quote)

Thank you Ben, Jan, Paul, Rob, Don, queencitysanta, Ken, trackmag, junglejim1949, nimbushopper, Collhar, Hereford, tommy2, Chris, Paul J. Svetlik, Joel, Susan, Earnest! I don't know about you all, but I occasionally let my mind wander over wiki for various subjects where the first subject has hyperlinks going to some tangential subject and from there to more tangents. Most of the Gato-class subs have their own wiki pages and relatively detailed patrol by patrol descriptions. Stepping away from the harrowing hours submerged during depth charge runs and the terror of jumping into the ocean as your ship sinks from a surprise torpedo, the Navy's choice of fish as names is a chuckle. How did we think we'd strike fear with names like Darter, Flounder, or Grouper? Glad you enjoyed this trip through the Drum.
