Put your photos on your laptop and make another copy on the 1T Sandisk USB SSD at Costco for about $120. Light weight and no moving parts to break if jostled.

Come on LS, you couldn't guess it by the picture?

I bought a 2 TB flashdrive quite cheaply. No moving parts, and meant to to be attached to a keychain. It makes a perfect mobile backup.

After checking, I would guess my available memory in my C drive would probably get me through my trip, but I agree with the comment that I should not try to create a new routine while on the road. I just broke down and purchased 500 GB SSD that I will use when I travel. When I return I will copy the photos and any work I’ve done to my current portable external hard drive.

I will have to learn how to direct Lightroom to access them once I move them to my current external hard drive upon my return.

If anyone is interested, Amazon and B&H both have a sale going on for these SSD external drives right now.

Thanks again everyone for your guidance and advice!

I usually download my photos directly to an external hard drive (E) and then import them into Lightroom. I am planning a trip and am concerned about not having this external drive with me for a week as I attend a photo tour. How safe is it to travel with an external hard drive? I have a cushioned travel case made for this purpose but haven’t used it yet. I realize it’s another item to pack and half-pound for my weight limit, but otherwise, am I better off to just save my photos to my laptop’s hard drive (C) and move them to the external drive when I return home? I will not erase any of my memory cards until I return and are sure they are on the external drive.

My other concern is accessing the images from my C drive (laptop) instead of my E drive (external hard drive) in Lightroom. Can I just transfer them (their folder) back to E upon my return through Lightroom or am I looking for trouble? I hope this is clear.

If you're concerned about banging it around and damaging your hard drive, buy an SSD. That will give you the assurance that you need.

I travel all the time with a mechanical 1TB ext drive. No issues or worries. I do keep the cards with all pictures and use those to upload to LR. It is just as easy to upload from the hard drive. I suggest doing your hard drive storage by a folder for each card. Each time do the whole card. Have LR import from the latest. You can determine where they go. I convert all raw to DNG as it is likely to be more accessible than the various camera raw formats. LR now will take RAW on import with Z7. There is a media converter if you have issues but file management is more involved.

I travel for 2 months at a time to foreign locations twice a year. My "built like a tank" Lenovo T430, 1 Tb Samsung SSD for Windows 10 OS, 2Tb Seagate hybrid HDD internally in a cradle in the DVD slot for photos.

Externally, 2 HGST 2.5" Touro (no longer made) HDD's, both in cases (1 a Ruggard case, other a Case Logic) for backup photos. Several Transcend usb3 card readers. Normally carry both external HDD's in my carry-on hardshell, but have been known to put #2 external HDD in my hardshell checked bag. Have survived for a decade+.

At the end of each day, pull shot SD cards, put in card reader, and use TeraCopy (free version) with verify turned on (MD5 checksum for each file compared) to copy files to internal HDD. Then I TeraCopy files from internal HDD to one, then the other external HDD's. Once I have 3 separate verified copies, SD cards are ready to be reformatted in cameras.

But before I trust any HDD, and I have a lot, I provision them. Please see my method here (#3 and #4):

Yes, it takes time, 8+ hours for 2 TB HDD's, but now I have confidence. Drives in my HTPC run 24/7/365, some for years, without failure, just monitor for heat and periodically check for failing indications (see post).

Thank you everyone for your very helpful comments and suggestions. I currently download my photos to a portable WD Elements drive and then back that up to WD Elements desktop hard drive. Yes, I was primarily concerned about jostling it while traveling resulting in damage or failure. I just returned from a camera club meeting and learned more about the solid state portable hard drives that MrBumps2U and Trix mentioned above which will be half the size and should travel without a hitch since no moving parts. Next I will have to see how much memory I have available on my laptop (which I use only for my photos). That may help, too. I will bring my ipad and will back up there, too, but I use Lightroom on the laptop. I really appreciate everyone’s quick and complete responses!

I have been traveling for years using usb spinning drives.
Put them in my carry on luggage or even through check-in luggage.
Carry them in the trunk of a car or the floor in the backseat. Never a problem.
From the ones needing an external power supply to the small usb only drives.
Never had a problem.
For the cost of one 4tb SSD drive you could buy four or more spinner 4tb drives.
Having only one or even two backup drives isn't safe enough.
Having many backup drives is safer than lesser.

SSDs are more expensive but worth the cost as they are lighter and faster not to mention "bullet proof" !

I recommend Sandisk 1 or 2 tb external SSD.
