I like the rule of thirds, but it doesn't rule my life. I'll adjust the composition, depending on the scene.

Lots of us fall in line with your thinking, Jerry.

I don't even know how to do that tinkerbell, all my photos are real, aside from some post-processing. Glad you like it!

For me, I remind myself of the Rule of thirds on every shot because the grid is always there in my viewfinder. Having said that, I often disregard it if, IMHO, the shot looks better without it or the situation is "Get the Dang Shot".

I had this though when I hear or see 'The Rule of Thirds', inspired from that old western film, Treasure of the Sierra Madre "Rule of Thirds? We don't need no Rule of Thirds!"

In none of these images that I have made were "Rules of Composition" even a passing though.

That is beautiful! May I ask, don't be offended, were the birds really there? I remember a man in the camera club I go to had an interesting photo similar, but he admitted after the meeting he added his birds, just curious.

I don't know if you saw my reply Tinkerbell (I also clicked on "reply") but I did not photoshop it, just waited for the right moment!

It depends on what you are shooting. A lot of the time I will just look at it as the rule of 3.

The sun and steeple look as though are in line with the golden ratio points that I saw one time as an alternative to the rule of thirds. However, I don't see the golden ratio mentioned very much. Just an observation. Nice image.

That is because the Golden Ratio is just a mathematical formula. It really has nothing to do with beauty or composition but some use it as such. The diversity of life, even just the shape of a persons face would show that the Ratio do not always apply. It just happens that with so much diversity, that sometimes it matches. People just tend to make order of all things, even of chaos (then there are those who make chaos of everything...and say it is art LOL).

Here's one I shot this morning and posted to Landscape Forum for feedback.

With landscapes in particular, I often have no primary subject so I don't think of centering or thirds, just kind of balance, I guess.

The sun could be primary subject and would be close to thirds area if I crop a little sky. Because I wanted the sun's brightness to bleed onto the church steeple, I had no other choice for where to stand. I could, however, have chosen a wider view and/or cropped for different result.

There are 2 areas of focus in your picture, the sun and the area of the tree just above the ridge line. The sun draws attention as the brightest object (by far) in the photo. The portion of the tree I mentioned falls directly into the rule of thirds category.

I read about the rule of thirds long ago and I seem to have internalized it because people have told me I use it a lot.

Having composed my pictures in camera, without any thoughts of rules, it is surprising how often, when i later view the pictures on my computer, that they fall in line with the rule of thirds.

It may not be appealing to you but at some time during the year the sun will be sitting on the point of the steeple. Just an observation. Nice picture by the way

Actually not all that surprising at all. Studies of human perception have long indicated that arrangements inline with the ROT are perceived as inherently more pleasing and preferred over arrangements that are not. We appear to be “hardwired” to like compositions that follow the Thirds format.

Beautiful picture! As a former teacher rules are important, however there are those student who haven't read the text education text books and I have to fall back on experience. With photography ,however I look at the rules and think of the as suggestions. Even when following the rules my instinct says something isn't right with the composition. The rules go out the window and I rely on instinct reframing the view or even changing position. I believe the results are what matter.

... Balance! Perfect word to use on this subject!! Thank you so much, Linda!!
