In my Nikon D7000 I can change the prefix letters (in the shooting menu under file naming.) I believe the prefix initially was DSC-. I have gone thru DSD- and am now on DSE_. I'm pretty sure I can change any or all of the three letters.

And, the intended benefit of this action is?

I take the photos off the card and transfer them to my computer. I have the photos in directories that have the year as the main level followed by the project/location/date. So if I am shooting at Eklutna Lake, the photos will be under Photos 2020/Eklutna Lake 01242020.

For timelapses where I have more than 999 shots, I copy the directories off the card to the proper directory on the computer. The first 999 shots will go 001 to 999 as will the other directories that I copied. For the 2nd directory that also has the photos numbered 001 to 999, I use a program that inserts a "1" before the number. So a file that was named DSC_0034 becomes DSC_10034. I can then repeat the procedure for the other directories (inserting 2,3 etc. as required) and move all the photos into one directory so Lightroom/LRTimelapse can process the photos.

When exporting the photos from LR, I either change the name before export if I want to keep the RAW files or during the export. So DSC_0087.NEF becomes Eklutna Sunset 01242020 DSC_0087.NEF.

I would NEVER be able to find stuff by date. I can never remember when I went someplace.
I file by category\location. I can find anything by subject. THEN I can see when I went there from the date in the metadata.

How do each of you keep track of your individual photos.
I have a Nikon 7100 and just hit DSC 9999 my next shot reverted back to DSC0001 not DSC10001
How can I continue to shoot DSC file name and automatically keep the numbers increasing instead of rolling over.
If I change the DSC file name does it do anything to the camera settings
Thanks for your input.

I suggest using a program called Photo Mechanic when you move files off your memory card. I rename them with any metadata I want at that time and it illuminates any naming issues with a large catalog.

While all my images are stored in date taken order, I never look for files by date, only by metadata/keywords or via collections.

Searches/ordering by metadata are pretty much instant across my entire catalog.

I would think Nikon would have a similar setup to the one Canon has that I use. In the computer during download, I have it create a folder for the date year-month-day, then drop all photos into that folder.

I have a similar speed for finding what I want by subject in the directory name.
I started tagging in Windows a while back, basically to augment locating, still more to do.

In the Age of film, I organized my slides by topic; today I do something similar, having a folder/directory for each subject. The images come from a separate directory of originals, one master directory for each camera, then under it a structure which mimics folders/directories on my SD cards, one folder/directory for each hundred images. Since I am a fairly low-volume photographer, I have’s yet had a duplication of directory names.

I create a new folder in my computer for each event/tour, with a descriptive label and usually including a date. When I download my photo SD chip into the computer, I do so into the appropriate folder(s). I have a hierarchy of folders in the computer, which makes finding what I want pretty easy. I import into Lightroom directly from the folders (same organization), but create new folders for export to Flickr--those are designed to feature photos in a more meaningful way for viewers (and don't include all photos for various reasons).

I generally don't worry about the numbering given to photos by the camera, nor do I typically change them. Organization is by folders and Flickr Albums.

Apple Photos does the organizing for me. By date, albums by event etc. The EXIF data tells me what camera was used and how the image was shot. I have never used in camera folders and don’t pay much attention to file numbers. I download the sd card to Apple Photos soon after shooting and format the card to be freshly used another day. Works for me.
