I'm a big fan of screen protectors on everything.

Nikon supplied one on my D810 but when I purchased my D500 there was no plastic screen protector included. I stopped using the one that came with my D810. It's just a little bit harder to see the LCD screen clearly with it on. I will continue to endeavor to not drop either of my cameras.

Do you remember what brand?

I have tempered glass on my Samsung phone that works great but have seen comments on many camera protectors that the shield fits the door dimensions, not the screen dimensions and it cannot close.

I have the tempered glass protectors on both the D810 and the D850.
I can assure you that the D850 touch screen works just fine, no different than putting a tempered glass protector on to your touch screen phone.
As noted by others, the protection is inexpensive, and it doesn’t compromise the camera’s functions at all and it may save you a lot of $$$ someday. It is almost invisible, so it doesn’t even look out of place. And, if it never breaks, you can take it off before you sell the camera and your screen will look like new!
In other words: it couldn’t hurt!
A true win/win.

I shoot with Canon cameras and stopped using "screen protectors" on them years ago, with no harm ever done.

First, the screen protectors were a real pain in the arse. They fell off or peeled up constantly. (I don't have cameras with Touch Screens, so don't know if they will interfere with those. I don't use one on my phone, which does have a touch screen.)

Second, several model generations ago Canon started providing built-in screen protection.... inexpensive and relatively easily replaced glass on all their DSLR display screens. I haven't looked into current models, but some of the earlier ones I used the replacement glass only cost around $10, roughly the same as the third party protectors. And it was attached with adhesive allowing fairly easy removal of a broken one, as well as easy re-attachment of a new one. I don't know if the cost is the same with newer models that have Touch Screens.

But... thankfully... I've never needed one for any of my cameras. But I know several people who did have to replace the glass on their Canon and helped a couple of them do it. Cheap and easy.

I did have to replace the screen on a phone. Brand new, only had it a couple days, it slipped from a pocket when I bent over and fell about 2 feet onto concrete! That cost about $85 and had to be done at a local shop (it took about 1 hour). Since then I've installed one of the padded cases to my phone (though [/i]not[/i] an "armored glass" cover)... and am a lot more careful about the pocket I put it in! It's survived a few bumps without any problem and I haven't had a repeat performance, knock on wood!

Regarding camera straps.... I use Op/Tech Utility and Classic straps on my cameras and camera bags (their straps have proved to be much healthier for my shoulder, neck and back). Those have the bayonet style "quick releases". However, Op/Tech offers neat little Velcro "safety straps" to secure those quick releases and prevent accidental drops. Op/Tech calls these "Secure Its" and I highly recommend using them! At under $8 for a set of four (enough for two of the straps I use), they're very inexpensive compared to the cost of a camera or lens repair!

Since what Op/Tech uses are a fairly common type and size of quick release, I imagine their Secure Its would work on many other manufacturers' straps, too... though I can't be certain or give you any specifics other than that they are about 20mm (3/4") wide and 115mm (4.5") long. Reusable, easy to install or remove if needed...

“First, the screen protectors were a real pain in the arse. They fell off or peeled up constantly.”

If your screen protector rolled up, or peeled off, it was most likely not a tempered glass cover. It would have broken instead of roiled. (Nice thing is that when the new covers get damaged, they crack, but stay in one piece, kind of like a car windshield)
I also had problems with the older style of stick on protectors.
The tempered glass covers are just so much better than the previous “plastic film type product”. The adhesive is much better also, these days, it will stay on, just waiting to maybe some day save you a few $$$.
I recommend them.

Thanks to the OP and everyone else in bringing this to my attention. I always carried an extra ground glass for my view camera. I'm still pretty new to digital, and was unaware the DSLR had a similar issue with its screen. Now I'll be getting a protector for mine post haste!

Tempered glass screen protectors come in different thicknesses -- e.g., .8mm, .5mm, .3mm.

When I look at One-Star reviews for .3 mm protectors, I find comments that the articulated monitor will not close with the screen facing the camera.

Does anyone have a tempered glass screen protector on Nikon D5XXX that will close and lock with the monitor facing the camera?
