Yesterday I went to a lake/wetlands area with another UHH member, Pam, phv, to see what we could find in the way of birds. Pam is an avid birder and while I know nothing about birds except the very common types, robin, bluejay, sparrow and chickadee, she seems to know a LOT about different birds. I learned a lot. As I had not photographed birds in flight for over 15 years I thought I would give it a try with my Nikon D800 and my 24-85 lens. I also used my Leica M10 with a 50mm Summicrom to take some birds on the water photos. Many are heavily cropped. Both lenses did well in my opinion. I am interested in your viewpoints both good and bad.

Pretty good for an old man! Or a young one!
BIF makes some of us think more and get cranked up with the hobby.
Great photos. Who knew gulls would be worth photographing?

I love taking time to photograph gulls, they are bigger then the small bird but at the same time faster then the larger birds and raptors so they can be a challenge.
Your shots are great the only thing I would suggest is maybe not crop so close and leave the birds an are to fly out of the shot when your looking at cropping your subject. Not sure what your shutter speed was on these but I would make sure you stay above 1000 to make sure you stop the action.
Again great set of captures thank for sharing with us

Thanks.
Very true. Just one more factor for me to try to get good at.

Thanks for the helpful comments. I tried to do exactly that but there were so many other birds on the background (water) I didn’t always have a choice.
As for shutter speed I had no intention of shooting BIF to begin with. Then they were swarming around and honestly my shots were more like shooting game birds with a shotgun, more instinct than anything else for some of them. I agree the shutter speed would have helped but they just kept flying. Hope that makes sense.

Nice shots for a come back kid. Seagulls are great birds to capture in flight. they are fast and very graceful flyers.
