Consenus used to be that Mirrorless was the future. Consensus now is that Mirrorless is the present and the future.

Consensus is that mirrorless is the present.

Could be that smartphones are the future ...

The grass is always greener when captured with a mirrorless camera.

I have a Z6 that I use to shoot indoor sports (volleyball and basketball) and I am absolutely loving it. It was one of the best decisions I have made in the choice of camera bodies. There are no autofocus problems that are any different than my D500 or D3s. No camera is as instant as our eyes are. Do I sometimes miss the target initially? Yes, but that's not the camera's fault. I miss it on my D500 and D3s also. It's the computer between my ears that is the general problem. The Z6 will lock on and track the action of a basketball player all the way from a drive down the lane right through the layup--when I stop shooting. The pictures are sharp and clear, with very crisp colors. Amazing that I can see the girls' eyelashes. Took me about a day to get used to the electronic viewfinder because it's different. I can shoot at 9-11 fps but I have to remember to occasionally stop and let the camera take a break--it's not a machine gun where you hold the shutter release down and shoot until the cartridge is empty. The camera is so darn good that I want to capture everything, so I way overshoot. I read David Busch's Guide to the Nikon Z6 and also got a lot of help from a Nikon Ambassador friend of mine for a quick setup. I hope that this will encourage you to get a Z6 if you shoot sports or wildlife or a Z7 if you do portraits or landscapes.

For basketball, I station myself under the basket and near the corners of the lane and use the Nikon 85mm f/1.8, S series Z lens. For volleyball, I use a Sigma 135mm f/1.8 Art series lens from the top row of seats or end zone and the sharpness is incredible.

Anyone that complains about the shooting functions/behavior of the Z cameras doesn't know how to use them properly. There is a learning curve, but it only took me a couple of night time soccer games to get the hang. I have only forgotten to change cards twice during a session, so now I keep a closer eye on the gas gauge. But for heaven's sake, it's not the end of the world if I forget and have to change cards. It's not like I missed a Sports Illustrated cover shot! I also keep 2 spare batteries with me, and have not run a battery down from 100% to 0% in the middle of a shoot.

I only have one complaint and this is related to my aged hands. The camera body is compact and after a couple hours of steady shooting basketball in the vertical position, my hands get cramps in my fingers and palms. When this happens, I change to horizontal and then shoot rebound action under the baskets and get some really interesting expressions and closeups of the players' faces. I wish that Nikon would come up with a grip that had a shutter release for vertical shooting like the DSLRs have.

Mirror less is a bad name to use.

Agreed! Lets call it Electronic Viewfinder with Interchangeable Lens or EVIL for short.

I just got the Nikon Z6 and I just love it. I also have a D750. The Z6 is as sharp, if not sharper, than the 750, using the same lens. The only downside I’ve found so far is my AF lenses won’t auto focus on the Z6.

It depends on the lens. All of my AF lenses will focus and even my Sigma lenses will.

That stinks about the AF lenses. I guess if we switch to mirrorless, we have to purchase all new lenses. Yikes!

NOT so.

The bodies can be a little smaller and lighter, but some of the lenses still feel gigantic. It depends what you expect. For the Canon R and RP, you can use a 35mm or 50mm prime and it's a nice waking around camera. But add the excellent 24-105L and you feel the load just as you would a DSLR, because the lens is the bulk of the size and weight. Try it for yourself to judge if you really feel lighter.

I'd like to go mirrorless in the men's room. I'm tired of trying to figure out who's the old dude I don't recognize staring at me through the wall.

Take your glasses off, you gotta be pretty far gone if you need them to wash your hands (and I'm not there yet). That gets rid of most of the problem.

The difference between who you are and the photographer you want to be is really just the mirror.

It's good to be living in the future. The present is now obsolete.

Or just get AF-S or AF-P lenses as the mirrorless lenses are very limited. I just got some fantastic photos today at Joshua Tree NP using a 28-85mm afs lens. I paid $120 for it and I couldn’t ask for sharper images.
