To say nothing of Trump himself.

And yet it is Donald Trump who is POTUS rather than Hillary who once was rated the smartest woman in the world as I recall.

Looks like Liberal voters just ain’t too smart.

It would seem, after the debacle they called an impeachment trial, that most senators don't understand that 'evidence' is what you use to determine the facts. I guess the problem lies not only with those in the lower socioeconomic spheres.

Newbie here
This started out as a look at the lack of education of our younger children - there is no need to drag politics into it. It started out funny just leave it.

I was at a grocery recently and the cashier asked what was in the (bakery) bag. I told him 1/2 dozen bagels. I cold tell by his puzzled look he had no clue how many that was.

Back in the 70's when I worked at a super market I always had to pause and pretend to think before answering a question by doing math in my head. If I was too fast they wouldn't believe me. And my buddy (best man at our wedding) just left them standing with their mouth open. He was assistant liquor dept manager and while the night crew pulled stock and spotted it in the aisles we would yell out random prices from the cases - like 48 @ 79¢. Larry would punch it into an electric ten key calculator/adding machine with one hand while counting, inventorying etc. After anywhere from 5 or 6 times to a dozen the night manager would yell out TOTAL! Larry would hit total on the 10 key and yell out the total he worked out in his head. 1. he almost always beat the machine's cycle and 2. in about 5 years he was only wrong twice and both of those were decimal points misplaced by one column. This was about 3 or four times a night 3-5 days a week. The last time I saw Larry he was working at the Jet Propulsion Lab doing course plotting & navigation etc for a Mars lander mission.

If you can't bag kids and politicians, that only leaves used car salesmen and there's no fun in that.

My husband and I went through the McDonald's driveway window and I gave the cashier a $5 bill.
Our total was $4.25, so I also handed her 25c.
She said, 'you gave me too much money.'
I said, 'Yes I know, but this way you can just give me a dollar back.'
She sighed and went to get the manager who asked me to repeat my request.
I did so, and he handed me back the 25c, and said 'We're sorry but we don’t do that kind of thing.'
The cashier then proceeded to give me back 75 cents in change.
Do not confuse the people at MacD's.

We had to have the garage door repaired.
The repairman told us that one of our problems was that we did not have a 'large' enough motor on the opener.
I thought for a minute, and said that we had the largest one made at that time, a 1/2 horsepower.
He shook his head and said, 'You need a 1/4 horsepower.'
I responded that 1/2 was larger than 1/4 and he said, 'NOOO, it's not. Four is larger than two.'
We haven't used that repairman since...

I live in a semi rural area.
We recently had a new neighbor call the local city council office to request the removal of the DEAR CROSSING sign on our road.

The reason: 'Too many dears are being hit by cars out here! I don't think this is a good place for them to be crossing anymore.'
IDIOT SIGHTING IN FOOD SERVICE.

My daughter went to a Mexican fast food and ordered a taco.
She asked the person behind the counter for 'minimal lettuce.'
He said he was sorry, but they only had iceberg lettuce.

I was at the airport, checking in at the gate when an airport employee asked,
'Has anyone put anything in your baggage without your knowledge?'
To which I replied, 'If it was without my knowledge, how would I know?'
He smiled knowingly and nodded, 'That's why we ask.'

The pedestrian light on the corner beeps when it's safe to cross the street.
I was crossing with an 'intellectually challenged' co-worker of mine.
She asked if I knew what the beeper was for.
I explained that it signals blind people when the light is red.
Appalled, she responded, 'what on earth are blind people doing driving?!'
She is a government employee.....

When my wife and I arrived at a car dealership to pick up our car after a
service, we were told the keys had been locked in it.
We went to the service department and found a mechanic working feverishly to unlock the driver’s side door.
As I watched from the passenger side, I instinctively tried the door handle and discovered that it was unlocked.
‘Hey,' I announced to the technician, 'its open!'
His reply, 'I know. I already did that side.'
STAY ALERT!
My husband and I went through the McDonald's drive... (show quote)

Just to get somewhat back to the subject:

After reading all the way through answers to this post, I have one to tell on myself.

Me = college grad.

Grandsons aged 6 and 11yrs.
Both brilliant. (aren't all grandkids?)
Each has outside-the-school teachers for their advanced learning.

During the holiday break my 6yr-old asked if I would help with his math. (they don't even call it arithmetic anymore)
Being the dutiful grampa, of course I said that I would. DUH.
Here's what he wanted help with.

What the H ?

Not the actual assignment, but a sample of the work.

My eyes teared up.

When was the last time someone counted your change back to you?

I have asked cashiers if they even knew how to count back change lately. Not a scientific study of course but quite a few cashiers of varying ages, 16 to maybe 40. Only one near the top of the age group said she knew how but was not supposed to use it with customers. The others had absolutely no idea how the process worked.

This sounds a bit bogus to me. I do believe that every chain restaurant is equipped with up-to-date registers. All the cashier has to do is enter what is tendered and the register will tell them how much change is due. No math, no error, no thinking required.

Stan

You are most likely correct about restaurants and most every business in America having up to date registers that will tell the cashier the exact change to be given back. But that has nothing to do with the question you just answered. The person posted he wanted to give the cashier some change in his pocket and that confused the cashier.

What is the bogus part? Where did you start to get confused? Have you never as in EVER had change you wanted to give to a cashier to lessen your change and receive a bill back instead or pay the exact total? Many have stated that exact thing in this thread. Did you miss that part?

Yes registers are great but sometimes we, the customer, want to make a change in the manner of change we are receiving. In the good old days people knew that the customer giving change to round up the total would receive a different amount than the register told them. But the point of the poster is that these days, cashiers have no concept of that idea.

Please elaborate on your comment. What comments have I made that are foolish. The fact you do not agree with what I am saying does not in any way make me wrong or my comments foolish.

Had you been paying attention, you would have noticed that Leo B responded to the post, “And they vote,” by saying “Democrat,” so it was one of your fellow regressives who took humor and foolishly turned it political.

Yes I did notice. But apparently you did not notice what your Democratic friend said about Trump supporters. Are we/they possibly all wrong? Can you admit that?

The USA is lacking in teaching our youngsters the basics.
European and Asian countries are ahead of us in that regard.

When does the firing squad line up?? If that's important, what is unimportant??
