While I normally do very long, very remote backpacks in Utah's Canyon Country, this fall I did something a little different. I revisited a slew of places that I last backpacked in 20-25 years ago, taking a few friends with me who had never been to these locations. Consider it a nostalgia tour, at 67 I may never be back there. These first two sets are from Utah's Death Hollow. Thirty years ago I did all of Death Hollow from the top (starting on Hell's Backbone road and looping back via Sand Canyon). This time I duplicated a trip I did in 1994 starting on the Boulder Mail Trail off of Hwy. 12 and then going down Death Hollow to the Escalante River which we took down river to further down Hwy. 12. Also spent day 2 dayhiking up Death Hollow. A short, but sweet, four day backpack. The fall colors more than made up for the cold water we had to spend much time hiking in. The first shot is the "classic" view down into Death Hollow from the Boulder Mail Trail- yep, it's pretty steep going to get down to the stream. Besides that first photo taken from above all the photos were taken at either ISO 600 or 800 (being down in a deep dark canyon that rarely sees direct sunlight). I'll post more tomorrow.

Thanks for posting. Most likely it is somewhere I will never get to give a bad shoulder, limited range of motion and some serious nervousness about narrow steep trails, etc.

A beautiful set of images.

Wow, great photos and story. Good that you can still go there after 30 years. Keep up the hiking, 30 years ahead, you may still be hiking!

Hair raising! The scouring of the bank of the stream/river in #3 was done by flash flood waters. Beautifully photographed, thank you for giving us a look!
