Walking Tour or Carriage/Bus Tour (start at the Visitors' Center on Meeting Street) Note: Each carriage tour only covers one quadrant (to eliminate traffic congestion) of the city; not sure if the bus tours have to comply with the same tour rules

Civil War: Fort Sumter National Monument, Liberty Square Visitor Education Center, Fort Moultrie, the H.L. Hunley, Warren Lasch Conservation Center, Charleston Museum, Fort Lamar Heritage Preserve, Confederate Museum, Citadel Museum, The Battery, Aiken-Rhett Mansion, City Hall

Rainbow Row; City Market

Avery Research Center Bull Street

Unitarian Church Cemetery (a must-see IMHO)

St. Philip's Anglican Church

Middleton Plantation (best and oldest), Boone (most well-known), Magnolia (best wildlife), Drayton Hall (best preserved)

Patriots' Point and the USS Yorktown, Vietnam Museum

Walk over the Ravenal Bridge

Shem Creek (Restaurants: Waters' Edge, Vicery's, Tavern and Table, The Wreck)

Birds of Prey Awendaw (check website for hours)

Sullivan's Island (Beach): Restaurants: The Obstinate Daughter, Poe's Tavern

Charleston Tea Plantation (most unusual) (only one in NA) Wadmalaw Island

Joe Riley Waterfront Park (pineapple fountain)

St. Michael's Church

Angel Oak Johns Island

Mt. Pleasant Restaurants: The Pickled Palate, Page's Okra Grill, Five Loaves Cafe, Red Drum

Charleston Restaurants: Fleet Landing, Five Loaves Cafe, Halls Chop House, Fig (reservations), Husk (reservations), Rue de Jean (near Visitors' Center), Grill 225 (rooftop); Mason's on N. Market Street (lobster rolls), Gaulart & Maliclet (Broad Street), Rappahannock Oyster House. The Vendue (rooftop) I personally did not like Hymans Seafood Restaurant...touristy, you'll like it if you like being herded; my entree was not that great

34 West Theater (live performances)

Isle of Palms (beach, restaurant The Boat House)

You can take the water taxi from Patriots' Point to Charleston

"Only in South Carolina" (website) frequently features sites/restaurants in Charleston and the environs

Oh, wow...THANKS so much!!! I look at the Charleston websites and it's just overwhelming...so great to have personal recommendations/thoughts to help weed through things. Thanks for taking the time to make me such an extensive list. I don't think 4 nights is going to be long enough! :) Have a wonderful weekend!

Wonderful!!! Thank you Todd for taking the time to help me out! :) Fantastic suggestions! Have a great day!
You have plenty of suggestions already, but I cannot believe that the boat ride and tour of Fort Sumpter is not on every list!

Our B&B hostess told us it was a must! So it's already on our list. Glad to know it's a good one...thanks!

I was trying to not look at all the tourist things.
There is also the USS Yorktown, the City Market, the Provost Exchange and so much more.
If you are into architecture and history, the Preservation Society on King Street has tons of information. There are home tours in October, very interesting.

I did take as many photos on the boat ride as I did on the fort tour.

This is all good I information. We’ve been going to Charleston for 35+ years and own a place on the beach at Wild Dunes/Isle of Palms with some partners. When I have a few moments I’ll try to add to the info above. Just got back from there last week- it is my favorite city in the US! We learn something new about it each time we go.

Hope you enjoy your time there, and no you won’t be able to see everything in 4 days! You will probably have to go back, but I think you will probably want to! October is a great time to go except for the occasional hurricane, but as the last Mayor of Charleston (Joe Riley) said ‘that’s the price you pay for living in paradise’.

My husband and I are traveling to Charleston in early October, staying 4 nights in a B&B in the historic district. This is our first time in Charleston...what are some must-sees/dos and unique experiences? Best plantation to visit? Best nearby beach (can't get this close to the ocean without some beach time!)? Best restaurants? Not into wines, shopping, or bus tours at all. Please give me your best suggestions. Thanks in advance, Fellow Hoggers!

Unless I just missed it, no one has mentioned the aquarium in Charleston. It's been several years since we had opportunity, but I remember a number of notable exhibits, many of which were not particularly difficult to photograph competently.

If I recall, the aquarium is next to the launch for the Ft Sumpter ferry. I haven’t done either for many years. Took the kids when they were younger

We found the horse carriage tour very useful. Did not take many photos on it but got the lay of the land for then walking and driving around town and some history of the places we were looking at.. Ft Sumter is a must see and even more so Ft Moultrie (Free) which was the other half of the harbor defenses and much larger. Battery Park and go from Two Meeting Street Inn inland on Meeting Street. Just going up it took us about 3 hours for a few blocks looking at homes and taking photos, mostly looking. The historic City Market is OK but to me was not all that special except for the history of the location. The Charleston Haunted Jail was interesting. They give tours, I did not go just took photos of the exterior. Lots more there.

I especially appreciate these specifics from someone who knows the city! Great ideas! Any particular marsh area especially great for birding? My first love is wildlife photography....

Have you tried the Charleston Chamber of Commerce?? They may have an idea or two.

Plan to visit the only tea plantation in the United States, https://www.charlestonteaplantation.com/
We found it a fascinatingly beautiful setting, never realized the tea leaves have to be harvested approximately every 21 days. The whole experience is worth the several hours you will invest.

I have been to Charleston several times but never had the opportunity to visit with a camera and view all of the historical sites. In the late 50's I got knocked out in a Golden Gloves match there.
