I find myself with 3 free days to explore and photograph in the Ash Meadows NWP and the Pharump, NV vicinity. Has anyone ever visited these areas and can you suggest locations for wildlife and/or landscapes? I will be there from Sunday, February 2nd to the 5th. I am aware that the wildlife will be scarce because of winter but am hoping for some birds. Any and all recommendations are welcome. I will be staying at Spring Mountain Ron Fellows Racing School for the duration and do have a vehicle. Any UHH guys in the vicinity want to hook up?
Bonnie
Pahrump is the gateway to Death Valley. You might want to consider looking at that. The large school in the area is Front Sight Shooting facility to the west down Tecopa Road. If you see armed people with the name on masking tape stuck to their caps, they are harmless.

Thanks,
Let's see...armed men on the way to DEATH Valley; sounds like an exciting side trip. Unfortunately I will not have time to do Death Valley this trip. Looked into going back to Rhyolite again, but not enough time. Thanks for the suggestion and the chuckle.

The best thing about Pahrump --and I hope there aren't any Pahrumpers listening in at present-- is the long, slow descent from whatever range it is you drop down from during an approach from the west. At night. You top the crest, then see the lights of what looks like a major metropolis spread out ahead of you in the basin below, and you drive, and drive, and drive, and what seems like hours later, you actually get within sight of what might be Pahrump, then realize all those lights are just lights on poles scattered randomly around multi-acre spreads that contain a house here, and a mile further a house there, and so forth. Half an hour later, you enter beautiful downtown Pahrump, and you sneeze, and suddenly its gone again. Only to be replaced by miles and miles and miles of lights on poles scattered around multi-acre spreads that thin as you approach Death Valley and/or Area 51.
Maybe its better in the daylight. I don't know. Times I've passed through, I timed it so I could spare myself that drudgery.
Skip the camera and go to Front Sight while in Pahrump. Great place to learn how to handle a pistol, safely.

I did pass thru that-away back in 2009 with my motor home. I remember coming into the park from the west, came past Mono Lake and Mammoth Mountain. On the uphill into the park, it was sunset, and 108. I got into the park and the first campground was closed due to heat, so I trudged on. Now it was 9:30 at night and the temp went to 124 F. I got to another campground by about midnight and the first sign said, "no generators". So I powered up the gen and turned on the airconditioner. Of course, I was the only one in the campground so, "who cares". At daybreak, I got up and drove down to Shoshone, must have sneazed as I missed Pahrump. Anyway, in the time I ate breakfast, the temp went from 95 to 110. And I shook off the dust of Death Valley as I entered Las Vegas.
My advice. Go in winter!
In early December I stopped at Ash Meadows and due to rain there were closed roads and truthfully not much to see. If you shoot landscapes then I would recommend going on to Death Valley. The Mesquite Dunes are amazing and also Bad Water early or late in the day.
We also photographed at Ubehebe Crater and it is a neat area as well
Stay overnight at Stovepipe Wells and these areas are easy driving distances.

As a side trip, you'll be close enough to visit the Mountain Springs Saloon, in Mountain Springs. Great food and atmosphere.

My husband, Britt, starts his driving school on Monday, so I think Tuesday would be great. Thanks for your reply and looking forward to a UHH day! If you can PM me, I will give you more contact information, etc.
I'd also recommend a trip to Death Valley. If you're interested in some upscale dining in the area, the Pharump Winery is great. Enjoy the Ron Fellows school.

He died recently. Ash Meadows used to be a cathouse May still be for all I know.
... I've done the driving school and would suggest that you try to document your husband's experience with your camera. They do have a staff photographer, but IMO he was poor. Also, I'll second the recommendation for the Pharump Winery.
