I have driven the Denali Highway four times. The first in 2008 and the last in 2016. As of 2016 the majority of it was unpaved. It seems like maybe 10 miles at the Paxson end is paved and 5? miles at the Cantwell end. If you're going to drive it, make sure you fill up your gas tank before you start. There is one place you can get gas at I believe Clearwater Mountain Lodge 54 miles from Cantwell, but you ain't gonna like the price. The Paxson store was closed in 2016. Going either north or south from Paxson on the Richardson Highway (AK RTE 4) it is still quite a way to more gas.

Thank you very much. You are saying that is the Old Denali Road, no, it is the new Denali road, not to be confused withe the old one.

Nice photos, Mike, and your bus story brings back memories of those old busses of the ‘50s on those bumpy gravel back roads here in Indiana where I spent two hours every day on one.

Thank you very very much John. And they say the good old days.

Beautiful set! We did the all-day bus trip a decade ago. The driver kept it interesting and we made frequent stops for photos. It was well worth it, especially considering that you generally cannot drive your own vehicle that deep into the park.

Thank you very very much. We were told that you see dozen of animals, we didn't see one, but the scenery was beautiful.

Beautiful Park series, Mike. We did that bus tour years ago, and yes, it was pretty uncomfortable. Not sure I’d do it again, at least not in a school bus. Thanks for sharing, Mike. Have a great day.

Thank you very much Greg. Today they have sure better seats. My wife was with me, boy, did she complain, it was funny.

The Denali road is only paved for 12 or so miles in, the rest is gravel. There was a land slide on it this year and was closed somewhere in past 30 mile. Havent heard whats going on with it yet. I would check on that before going there in summer and expecting to take bus all the way in. The Denali Highway from Cantwell to Paxon is a great scenic drive but long and rough and definitly must be prepared for that drive. They let you drive in to 30 mile on the Denali road in the spring when they have the road plowed out that far, but thats all the farther they let you in. 30 mile in is Tetlinika Campground.

I drove the old Denali road twice, you are correct it is a terrible road, but the scenery is beautiful.
