I was very impressed with a group of pictures on here that were shot across a field from a long distance - the total area - then the longest telephoto shot possible with the Canon SX40 of a single house. I had never seen such a small area in an overall scene so sharp with such good resolution, from the same spot! Sorry, I don't remember who the photographer was, but the picture was outstanding for any camera, let alone a bridge camera! Nuf Said'

After reading the answers to my question re the Canon xs 40, I decided to purchase it. Found it online from rep. company and with my discount from Amazon got it for $309 and a box of goodies to go with it. I currently use a Canon G12 and it is awesome. But since I order the 40 so I can get a better wide angle w/o going to the more expensive DSLR , what should I expect quality wise in the new camera? Should I expect to see a huge difference in quality and color. or just a slight difference except when I am shooting the wide angle shots. 1/2 of me still thinks I need to get a DSLR, but I seriously don't want to spend the money for it and still need to get a better wide angle lens. This little hobby I picked up a few years ago, is getting me addicted and I don't want to go overboard in a camera or complicated mechanics/learning curve. Uh, in case you all haven't noticed, I do get a little carried away in my posts-sorry-my brain just gets to going and 2nd guessing things, and out it all comes. Thanks for your help-I am learning alot. Here's a few from my G12 camera-

I have a canon 40d and wondering if the EF 28-135 f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens would make a good walk around lens?

I also have the 40D. My fave camera. Might I suggest an alternative to you? Do yourself a favor and get the Tamron 28-75 2.8 for your walkaround lens. It compares favoably to canon L glass and at $475, It might be the biggest bargain in digital photography.. You'll get the world class speed of 2.8 through the range and free up some money to venture into telephoto later. You will be astounded with the quality and the color saturation of this lens. Just the best deal out there IMHO Best of luck no matter what you do

Do yourself a favor and listen to real people discuss the topic, not folks with an agenda. Type into google Tamron 28-75 compared to L glass Read the comments and maybe even observe some of the comparison tests. It's a real eye opener.

Thanks to all of you. Been sick and just caught up with all the comments. I was really hoping to go out this w/e and shoot but got a really bad case of head and chest cold and all the junk that goes with it.

thanks for encouraging me-BTW I did get it from Beachcamera and that was one of the sites that was recommended so that made me feel better. Now if I can just get where I can breathe again me and Mr. Tripod have a date.
