Just picked up a Nikon 40mm to try my hand at macro. Plan to use it mostly for flowers, plants and people. I have a Godox 685 flash and am considering a Ring Light Flash.Never had any experience with a ring light. What are your thoughts? Thanks
You will be more tha pleased with the lens. I use a ring light for flowers that I can control left side, right side or both sides. I avoided flash for flowers as the light is harsh if you don't use a diffuser.
I use a ringlight frequently on my macros. It' a definite help in many instances.
Looks like you are going to have fun. Try some things, and see what you think. I would enjoy seeing your efforts here.
I'm confident that you will truly enjoy your new journey into macro photography. A word of caution however, it is highly addictive and there is no known cure..!
I have the Nikon 40mm Macro lens. Nice lens but not a lot of working room. I usually use the 105mm which gives me much more working distance. I like using a ring light, it's nice having one that you can control what part of the light you want to use, left, right, top, bottom or all.
Good luck in your venture into Macro. It's a whole new world.
In order to capture true macro (1:1 magnification), your working distance (lens front element to subject) with a 40-mm lens will be about 40-mm (1.6-inches). 40-mm lenses are mostly used for flat document recording, not field photography.
Please read a few of the permanent posts at top of page 1, of True Macro Section.
