When on a shoot, besides your camera, what 3 things do you always carry?

I will go first:
(1) extra battery
(2) extra memory
(3) lens cleaning cloth

Those three plus extra camera and lens so that I can shoot long and wide.

All these people who say they would take a gun on their photo shoot makes me wonder where they are going. 80% of my pictures are taken in Alaska, my home, and I would only take a gun (rifle) if I was going into a known grizzly area, like Admiralty Island. This happens about once every five years. For black bears a whistle and bear spray is much more effective. Besides that or maybe some bad neighborhood in Chicago,(no place I would want to wander around with a camera) I am at a loss as to why a gun would be on any list here. In my job as a photography guide I have 25 to 30 black bear encounters every season, sometimes multiple encounters in a day (for 25years) and have never felt I needed a gun. I have no problem with guns, but on a photo outing? I don't get it.

Black Bear, Juneau. About 15ft. Spent 45 minutes with him. All was cool.

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s l wandered Chicago and Philadelphia PA areas with 8x10, 4x5, Hasselblad and/or Alpa Roto 70 cameras at any hour. Legal or not, l had knife and pistol within reach wherever l went.

And never needed them?
For those following this thread, I don’t mean to hijack it but the idea of guns on a photo shoot and people carrying guns to all the cool places we get to go with our cameras just seems wrong.

Just remember, the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is with a good guy with a gun. Be thankful for that.

The OP's question was ALWAYS carry. For me, the same 3 items. After that, what will be carried depends on the location, situation, and purpose.

Both cities, and rural areas, are full enough of people who would kill you to get your photo gear...so they can sell/ hock it to get drug money. Trying to ward them off with lens cleaning fluid, or mosquito spray, or bear spray, won’t work that well. Throw some hollow points their way, and you have a chance.

Your home should be the safest place in all the world for you. A few years back, a local druggie broke into my home, and tried to kill me. I am here, to tell the tale, because I had a gun, and used it...putting three hollow points into the perp. Since even one’s own home is not safe, how much more unsafe must the world outside the home be? Wilderness areas-with no cops, hospitals, etc, for hundreds of miles-are the least safe...adding wild animals to the threat list, in addition to druggies, escaped prisoners, and others, who would be glad to harm you. Not so long ago, I was in a forest, on the coast. I had my photo gear, my girlfriend, and a gun, in addition to some camping gear. We stayed overnight. In the middle of the night, a prison work gang-which had been working, and camping, on the other side of the forest-staged a breakout. Several prisoners escaped, and moved towards my camp. When they saw my gun, they ran a different direction...rather than attacking me, and my GF. As I learned in The Cub Scouts...it pays to Be Prepared. Tis better to have a gun, and not need it, than to need a gun, and not have it.
