Good compositional practice is to leave space for the action to move into. So, some more space on the right of the magic from the chest is a good idea. However, I see it as too much space. Since visual weight is often perceived differently by different people, I have no "objective" suggestion.

Well done for its dramatic light, and for its composing--assuming you do not actually possess such a chest.

Thank for the comments Bob. I sent the picture out last night to be put on glass. They had several sizes but each one had me crop some of the right off. Should be ok, will still be off center but not as much.

Love it, Jim,

Iā€™d crop a bit from the left but leave the full mass of darkness on the right to get the optimal balance with the brilliant light source on the left.

Good job; great impact.

I shot this 3 years ago and failed to have anything I thought worth while. I tried again a year ago, failed again. I did it again last night. With this one I'm interested in your Critique. I had a second version with added butterflies but thought it took away form the mystique. Interested in your opinion on the blank space.

Jim it looks very smooth and wonderful with your lighting. Can you explain the process you used to achieve this image?

Thanks Brent. I shot it in a dark room. I put the box on a table and lit it with a continuous LED light, just enough to see some exterior of the box. The lid was open and I put another speed light inside the box and covered it with an orange or yellow gel. In the post processing I added another layer with a light beam that I had downloaded for free sometime in the past. I then added another orange solid color layer clipped to the light beam to make it match the softer color coming out of the box. Being clipped to the light beam this color only effected the light beam.

Having said all that I did go out and make a glass print of this and it came out too dark.šŸ„µ I went back into the file and tried to lighten it up to try again and I can't open it up enough. I should have used a longer camera exposure for the LED light. LED lights just don't have much power.šŸ˜ Looks fine on computers but not good enough for printing.

I Love IT!! The light just pops out at me from the chest! I love that you left plenty of dark empty space. It makes the light even more effective. Just enough light on the chest so we know it's a chest, but not so much that the chest distracts from the subject of the source of the light .. which is a mystery .. and I just love a mystery. Nicely done.

This is the problem I have run into when I very recently started printing my photographs. The computer screen seems to illuminate photographs and that's very deceiving. I'm hoping that with experience it will get easier.

Thank you Nightstick. Out of my last 10 prints about 7 were right on. If the picture is an intended dark picture then I have to be super careful about getting it to print like my screen. I have 3 right now that are properly printed and in a Photography show. Will see how it goes.

On another note, I see that you have been away for about 4 months. Missed you, hope everything is okey.
