the camera tech is unreal for me as I just look around again.
had a vintage shop and did some trading in old photo and camera stuff - still have some cool things.
My question is this -
expensive cell phone with hi-tech camera? (expensive)
or a communication device separate and combined with a slip in the pocket camera of better quality than the phones. Small camera if carrying 2 pcs. of electronics.
(expensive also I guess)
The google phones are sending out software updates every month for quality and even post processing.
carry 2 things or 1 - update - hardware - software - can't afford to buy new things all the time
pics and video wanted
in the 60's,70's and the 80's was always a component stereo buff - could that come back?

I have all size levels from an iPod (no phone), through a cellphone, through some fixed-lens cameras, up to a Canon t2i,

I can't get used to the ergonomics of taking pictures with a cellphone or iPod camera. It just doesn't work for me and I waste much time with those little buggers. Perhaps six decades of "real" camera use has made it hard for me to embrace the new technology.

WOW - Am going to take some time to think and reply to all this info.
Every reply has something to blend in and learn from.
Maybe will do the old pro/con on paper will help me keep my thoughts straight, so as not to keep changing my mind.
What a wealth of knowledge, experience(s), suggestions and just downright useable info.
So many homework assignments just laying down a base from all your info. that I can build on.
Just here in Colonial Williamsburg, Yorktown and Jamestowne (Island) there are a lifetime of things going on constantly. It really is a great place to live even if I can no longer drive. (not to mention Busch Gardens)
I have some camera and photo related items (from my vintage shop) I am now going to pull out and go thru with a different set of eyeballs! In 1 drawer I already found what I think is a NIB Kodak Easyshare Z650
and a (NIB) Kodak Tourist Camera in original plastic wrap!!! with book and Box with one side torn off(No. 17, 620 film)
As I look, just learning to make best use of this site will take some doing.
Grew up around here and now thinking about local opportunities I am starting to remember many things that went on here since 1607 and the Indian Nations before that.
Just found out about an archaeological dig in Sussex County that's 18,000 to 20,000 years old. Oldest in North America I think.
Anyone traveling I'd like to pay your help forward, maybe I should put together a photo opportunity travelogue now that I'm going to think along those lines.
Stray thoughts - James River Plantations, Colonial Parkway, NASA Langley AFB, Fort Monroe, Norfolk Naval Yard, Newport News Shipbuilding - 1 builds the carriers and subs and 1 docks a lot of them.
Could go on for hundreds of places, afterall, about 1 hr. to Va. beach in 1 direction and Richmond 1 hr. in the other. WOW, dang, I'm almost 66 - guess I need to get started, have a garage sale and see what I can find.
I'll shut up now - that ain't easy for me.......

I just had to upgrade my cell phone. Galaxy 10s. 3 cameras. Great camera for surprise walk around shots. Have 3 canon cameras xsi/t3i/77d. Also 10,000 of telescopes and eyepieces so not afraid of spending cash for optical. Have Samsung pointshoot 10 yrs old. Cell images convention for record shots.

With the advent of microprocessors and superior computer programming I seriously doubt component-like systems will be developed unless there is a breakthrough so substantial it’s worth carrying an additional piece in your pocket. Stereo components were in-home systems never meant to travel. But who knows what the future may bring?

Been spending time on TV and CELL PHONE reviews and youtube comparisons (all taken with a grain of salt)
I'll try to remember all those hours of research as closely as I can, this is 1 of the things I remember some of.........
Motorola (I THINK) was developing a component cell/camera system.
GOOGLE bought the rights and buried it. China bought Motorola.
Heck - now you can't even change your own battery anymore.
Someone seemed to think that their reasoning was they didn't want to sell you a component but a whole phone with planned obsolescence, and they already have the tech and marketing ready for years down the road. They already know what they will have in 3 and more years, That why the leaks are so accurate and the employee non-compete and corporate insider lawsuits are such a big thing.
Someone else was of the opinion that all that was left was to perfect the connections between the components.
I would love to buy just the part I wanted to upgrade
Will now start trying to recognize any hidden related little clues that sneak through.
Love the research but hate the corporate skullduggery I find. Plus my butt, cheap laptop and brain is wearing thin.
Need to finance a new all day computer chair (with nap capability) a computer with voice to text (can type only OK with 2 fingers now) and a bottle of good bourbon (obvious answer to the thinning of the brain problem, my opinion and I'm sticking to it)
not necessarily in that order.

I heard a dinnggg noise and a light bulb come on while reading your reply.
Now normally that should be alarming but I've found that at 65 it's falls more into the interesting or cool category! Tired of being bored and new and different breaks up the day.
AND THEN a thought occurs....
Kickstart a project to develop a new and revolutionary case for your cellphones - you buy them anyway - right?
Will make it BIGGER and the shape of a POINT and SHOOT camera (add some features with the new space)
so it will fit in our hands to make it easier to use a cell phone for taking pictures with.
Snap your phone into a water tight, bigger battery backup and easy to handle case and start shooting.
Maybe a stable platform for component cell/camera systems?
Venture capital people and patent attorneys feel free to contact me.
People with ideas for improving with ideas, record them here 1st and early, and get on the early development team for percentages of the the company.
Remember Google it was published here 1st. sorry

hey Beautiful Shenandoah Valley from Williamsburg, love your home area
Gonna dig out my 2 Kenwoods and a Sony from the 70's and post the model #s
Also have a new in the box Teac (TN-300) direct drive with direct to computer USB recording for sale but will not ship a turntable. Got sick and lost my vintage shop and live in a housing center now -
want to turn it up now but can't
All will go up for sale soon - need a set of "shut my mouth" headphones. OR maybe an intermediate camera that will stand on it's own for a good while.
Old ladies are always welcome to chase me around, even with rolled up newspapers - but not for the loud music reasons.
Haven't been to the valley for decades - does Amtrak go from here to there I wonder
Great picture and places to see opportunities everywhere around here like where you live

What??? You mean today we only listen to music via tiny ear bubs bluetooth to the smart phone?

AHH - 100's of hours (disabled and stuck on this computer) of research (TV CELL and PHONES mostly) and now a small reference from BebuLamar and I recognize a crossover camera type comment that people had that didn't pertain to me as I tried to keep track of what would work best for me.
I am now piecing together small parts of conversations like yours if I understand your satire?
Many (deep into TV CELL and PHONE etc. forums) commented/complained that they would spend many more $$$ on more expensive phones even though they had to give up a headphone jack that has been and still is available on cheaper models but is being phased out over time it sounds like. Why take the jacks from the pricest models 1st? 'Cause those customers would pay up for the extra cost of the extras without as much bitching? maybe?
Now they had to purchase a dongle or expensive new tech earbuds also.
Those corporation marketing executives are really good at luring every dollar out of you - and worse yet making you like it.
They already know what you will be buying 3 years from now - they are designing/ordering the manufacturing equipment now

I am currently shooting with top end Sony gear and a 4 year old smart phone. The recent crop of phones look very interesting and some have as many as 3-5 cameras, ranging from wide angle to telephoto.

My phone takes great images within its limitations and I'll be using it until 5G becomes ubiquitous.

I love my Sony gear but suspect it will be the last big camera system I'll own.

5G is one of those things I have not even tried to understand - so much differing info and I have learned not to even try to sort through stuff that is so far out of my understanding and the "expert" opinions out there.
What my friends tell me is to just wait to see when a consensus forms as to it's effect on hardware.
5g will have so many differing scenarios it seems
heck sigh crap WTF do I do ETC.
It almost seems which building you live in will affect your opinion
I need an advisor/mentor/prophet for this one I think
sigh - add 5g to the deep research list under how will it affect what we should buy
If it's truly just line of sight then resurrect Tesla or fund SpaceX
and get rid of power lines as we know them.

To answer your question, they are not 5 times better than a 2008 phone. Five times does not describe it well. The latest phones are infinitely better. I do almost everything on my phone that I can do on my desktop computer, and many other things that I can't do on my computer. And I can do it anywhere in the world.

These days I only use my desktop when I need a large screen and/or am using software which only runs on a computer. Other than that, 90% of the things that I used to do on my desktop in my home office I now do on my phone. At least 75% of my posts on UHH are written on my phone which is an $800 two year old Samsung Galaxy s8 plus.

Back in 2008 I could only do a fraction of the things I do today on my phone. I use my phone to make my Amazon Prime purchases, and to make my purchases at restaurants and supermarkets using Samsung Pay. I text and email from my phone. I also create, review, and update Microsoft Word files, Microsoft Excel files, and Microsoft PowerPoint files for my wife's business. And a thousand other things everyday.

In about a year or so I plan to upgrade to the latest Galaxy s20 plus. It will likely cost around $1,100 or perhaps a bit more. Considering the use I make of my phones, it's worth every penny to me. And, completely aside from all their other great features, modern phones have a pretty decent camera. Probably my least used app is the dialer. The term cell phone is really a misnomer. I probably spend much less than 5% of my time on my phone actually making phone calls.
To answer your question, they are not 5 times bett... (show quote)

Do you think phones with the abilities you need will stay at these prices or may come down as tech gets better?
Should we hold on to them a bit longer each time and thereby extend a purchase out at a little bit of savings each time down the line?

I have the highest quality combo you can get. The phone part is waterproof, shockproof, and dustproof, and gets service where my wife’s latest and greatest Galaxy struggles. The camera features interchangeable lenses and the whole unit can be swapped out for a different format. Oh, and I also have a pocket computer (I think it’s called an hPhone, or something like that...) that I use with my WiFi to manage my mail, calendar, spreadsheets, and photo apps. It also can take pictures, as shown below.
