There are many restrictions imposed on society because of irresponsible behavior. Regretfully like many things in our PC world, everyone pays the price for the few. The inconsiderate use of drones and people flying them wherever they want, is in my opinion no different than people who bring Peacocks, pigs, and ponies on a plane claiming they’re therapy animals.

This past summer at a softball elimination games, some one was flying a drone. The person was told it was distracting, and possibly dangerous. Long story short, he continued flying his toy and it crashed into the rear window of a car breaking it.

So even though I’m sure you don’t fall into the category of those that created the problems, you and many others are paying the price.
Enjoy your trip.

The only way you could get permission to fly a drone on a cruise ship would to be to get the Captain's permission before the day you board the ship and that is extremely unlikely because contacting the captain is almost impossible unless you are a high ranking employee of the cruise line. Even if you were successful in contacting him, he could probably not grant your request because he is bound by company policy and furthermore he would probably consider a drone a possible hazard to the safe and smooth operation of the ship for which he is responsible for both safety and the comfort of his passengers, which includes maintaining a low anxiety level.

I did a 'doors-off' helicopter tour of Oahu. It was so much fun I did it again 2 days later. Beats a drone anyday!

I did many "doors-off" chopper tours of Tay Ninh Province, Vietnam. 51 years ago, Still fun, given the circumstances.

I just got home from a cruise of the Caribbean on NCL. There was a long list of items that you were prohibited from bringing onboard. In addition to the obvious (guns, knives, spears e.t.c.) Drones were on the list. I'd check with the cruise line specifically.

As a certificated drone pilot and photographer I agree with most of what you say. However, due to the actions of a few bad drone operators, the perceptions of drones and their pilots have been damaged beyond repair.

As we know today, the public's PERCEPTIONS of the truth and reality are usually much more powerful than the real situation. So I expect more and more restrictions of drones along with more animosity from the general public who feel threatened by the mere presence of drones. For example, I have friends doing real estate photography who have been threatened by neighbors while taking photographs of the house being sold. The neighbors called police who then questioned his motives and told him to stop or face receiving a ticket for disturbing the peace.

I had one of those 'bad' drone flyers on my tour last summer. Five hours of hiking and whale watching, all with a photography slant in Juneau, Alaska. He asked me at the start if he would be able to use his drone and I pointed out that there was nowhere on this tour that he could use. It wasn't a tour rule but more the places we were going. He could have left it on the secured van when we were out and about but wanted to carry it "just in case." Just in case what? I had all ready told him there was no place he could use it. He didn't push it but I had the feeling he was always looking for that spot he could put it up when no one was looking. It kept me on edge a little the whole tour, which was kind of a drag. He was just the type that gives a bad name to responsible drone flyers. (He didn't tip me either.)

As noted earlier, the sign refers to bringing the drone on board the ship. If you try to bring it aboard on embarkation, it may be taken from you and put in storage to be returned at the end of the cruise. The advice to call the cruise line on this question is a good. State and Federal regulations control where and when you can fly your drone within a state, not a cruise ship company (except on the ship), but as a drone owner you already know this.

Do you mean any cruise ship, or that particular one with the sign?

What is your authority on that?
