My first SD card failure. Are there any recovery options?

Well, it has finally happened. While I have heard of card failures, and have accepted that it would likely happen to me eventually, I’m not sure that I truly believed it would, but it has. Fortunately, I caught the issue early in the shoot, and have dual card slots, but my backup is JPEG, so it would be great to be able to recover the raw files. So, my question is, does anyone know of any options I might try to recover the data? I searched the archives and didn’t see anything recently on this, so I’m hopeful there may be an option. Thanks!

Could you please be more specific about the failure?

I don't know if this program will help, but check out Recuva.

While reviewing photos during the shoot I was not able to view some of the images, then when I try to view them on my computer, there were no images on the desk.

Aren't you glad you have two card slots? Don't you wish both saved raw?

Pat, yes try Recuva, then if that does not work there are professional companies out there that can recover the images. However, they are not cheap. Depends on the necessity of needing the Raw images if you want to spend a couple of hundred to try and get them.
You can also try to contact the card mfgr. as they might have their own recovery program also.

Good luck to you.

I agree. Better to have redundant raw. Saving jpegs in camera is unnecessary. If a camera has two slots, save raw to both. There is a weak case for jpeg - "if you need it right away" - I have yet to experience that - for clients or family and friends.

Sandisk has a gaurenty. As far as I've ever seen they give a free card recovery program when you buy a genuine Sandisk memory card.

In over 20 years, I've never used the program for a Sandisk card but do own several offerings.

For other brands I've had to use the Recover program several times after their card got to about two to three years old. That included virtually every other brand SD card except, Sony and Samsung. Those worked as reliable as Sandisk SD cards.

I do admit that the Sandisk company has replaced two cards out of about 20 cards used total. That was because of the plastic "lock" switch breaking. They have menopausal problems sending a free replacement.

If your card is not a Sandisk, purchase the Recover program like many have mentioned above.

If your SD card is a SanDisk Extreme they provided an activation key with the original packaging which will allow you to acquire RescuePRO Deluxe at no cost. This program recovered all my lost images similar to your dilemma. I did not have the original packaging but the customer service rep at SanDisk kindly provided an activation key after I provided him with the alphanumeric number on the back of the SD card. Excellent service from SanDisk and RescuePRO Deluxe is an excellent recovery program. Good Lick!
