My wife and I are going on a Viking river cruise in a couple months. We depart Amsterdam and travel to Budapest for 15 days. We then go to Prague for 3 additional days. We have scheduled excursions for every day they are available. We will still have time on our own.

I am looking for suggestions of must see/do things on this trip.

Look forward to any and all suggestions...

Really. That is the day we arrive and we, from previous experience, will be exhausted. we were thinking of passing on this, but will reconsider. Thanks for the suggestion

I did this cruise a couple of years ago, great trip, Viking does a great job.
We went a day early and did Amsterdam, very nice city, people there are
really friendly. You will not believe the number of bicycles. Take one of the many
canal cruises. You will really enjoy the trip.

Thanks. I’ve heard good things about this cruise and Viking tours.

I found the museum of Communism in Budapest very interesting! There is also a outdoor museum of sorts near Budapest that we did not get to that has some the old monumental statues from the communist era that sounds interesting!

Here is a link to photos from a trip in 2013. The first 10 pages are Budapest. Then off to other cities by train and car. Not a cruise and the other cities included Vienna, Bratislava, Prague and Chesky Krumlov (not in that order) I don't usually post these links and have not taken the time to label all images, but thought some of the ones from Buda and Pest would be interesting. They are both among my favorite cities in Europe (along with Venice!).

Same cruise in April to catch the tulips in bloom. 3 days early to explore Amsterdam and 3 days after cruise. Be watching this thread for recommendations.

“We will still have time on our own.”

Perhaps you can go back to some of the places the excursions brought you to if they were particularly interesting. I’ve found that sometimes the guided tours don’t allow enough time at some locations. Or maybe just find a spot to wander and “people watch” if that’s of interest to you.

Thanks for the tip...that i my experience from past trips we have taken...we are doing something every day so unless it is compelling we will probably rest for the next days adventures...maybe work on some of the million pictures i will take...although this time i might go for quality instead of quantity...

We are going in April also...we leave the 4th for the cruise...we are extending our cruise to Prague for 3 days...thought about going early but decided that was just too long to be away...

We are very much looking forward to the trip...
