Canon PowerShot SX50 HS

Canon have now released the SX50 HS. After seeing the recent topic on here regarding the SX40, and the volume of users who have that camera, as a matter of interest, how many of you would consider upgrading to this new model and do the improvements to the specification, justify the increased cost. A review can be seen at the link below.

I am saving up for it, plan to purchase within 3-4mo after it hits the local shelves!! LOVE the added reach, faster shot-to-shot time, optional remote release, extended shutter speeds, and the list goes on!! Just keeps getting better!!

Anxious to see some actual test shots from a production model.

I am waiting for more sample pics and hands-on reviews, before I decide. The SX30 is still fresh in my mind - looked good on paper, but in practice...not so much.

If it proves to be measurably faster than the SX40, and doesn't lose any IQ, I'll be getting one. Gotta be convinced, first.

Thank you for posting the review. First I have seen on this Canon model.

I currently have a Canon SX30IS and am not quite ready to trade up or replace. The increased reach is impressive, but how often do I use even the full zoom on the 30? Not very often. If I were a birder, the 50 would be that much more attractive and perhaps a no brainer.

Meanwhile, there is also the Panasonic FZ200 to consider with its full range F/2.8. For me, the speed is a more attractive and more frequently usable feature. First reviews on the FZ200 are posted on Amazon.

Thank you for posting the review. I was going to get the SX40 after reading and seeing - it did/does everything I'd want a camera to do for me at less the cost of upgrading my XTi. But....might do a little more saving and go with the SX50 after I see some photos from one from long distances. That's what I'm more concerned about - the clarity of the photo at a long reach.

robbygb,
I, too, am an SX40 owner like many other folks on UHH and got REALLY excited when I read the specs on the new SX50. I'll probably get one but if there's one thing I'm not particularly fond of is the change in f-stop on the lens. The SX40 has a range of 2.7 to 5.8 and is a definite factor behind all the praise for the SX40's low-light capabilities. The SX50's range is 3.4 to 6.5. I'm not sure how this will "come out in the wash" for low-light but hopefully there will be a solution. Other than that, it looks like Canon is in the race for good superzooms!

I'll probably take the 'wait and see' attitude. There should be a number of reviews coming out now.

I am giving my SX40 quite a workout this week in Washington, D.C. I left my DSLR at home for this trip. I already have hundreds of photos of D.C. so I'll be able to compare and decide if the SX40 will suffice on trips where I don't want to take a lot of camera equipment.

robbygb, br I, too, am an SX40 owner like many oth... (show quote)

I believe that the SX50 makes up for this by improving the ISO capability and noise reduction at higher ISO's
