here in UK we have (endangered) Red Squirrels and imported Greys. The greys out-compete the reds and carry a pox that is fatal to the reds.

Are there any red squirrels in the USA?

Red squirrels are more successful in pine forests, some isolated locations, free of the greys are flourishing.

smaller, dare I say more attractive, and much shyer ......dont become a pest at the bird feeder

My friend invited me to an X-mas eve barbecue featuring Venison, Squirrel, and Iguana all fresh. Yummy

We have Red Squirrels and several other types.
Here are two sites - both say 5 types of squirrels but 5 different ones, first site has pictures:

https://www.worldatlas.com/articles/5-types-of-north-american-squirrels.html

https://animals.mom.me/different-species-squirrel-living-4989.html

And of course the Eastern Gray squirrel got to Britain because people brought them to release on their estates - they even know the name of the man who took them to Ireland in 1911. https://www.imperial.ac.uk/news/170448/dont-blame-grey-squirrels-their-british/

thanks for the information, are the local red squirrels immune to the grey's squirrel pox or are the populations sufficiently isolated.?

Maybe we could import some hopefully immune red squirrels ?

Thanks for an amusing set of pictures of these bushy-tailed little rascals. Your caption, “I love cashews” reminded me of my mother’s experience with a neighborhood squirrel. She started feeding a little gray squirrel peanuts on a daily basis. The cute little guy would actually scratch her storm door to beg for a nutty handout. She enjoyed feeding the little gray and he would take the peanuts from her hand. One day, the squirrel stopped coming for his handout and my mom feared a local cat got him. She told her story to a neighbor who lived across the street from her. “Oh Jean,” he explained. “The little squirrel is fine. I started feeding him cashews and he comes every day now.” Yep, the little guy got spoiled... Can’t say I blame him. I prefer cashews to peanuts also.

Thanks again for the cute pictures and reminding me of that story.

UK grey squirrels dont seem to be scared of cats ! We bought our house in Cambridge, close to Cherry Hinton Hall ( Cambridge Folk Festival )

and the son of the vendor asked us to take on a semi-tame grey he had raised from a " Squib ", I said we would look out for it and it visited every day

and played with our siamese cat, flicking it's tail ......" Chase me !" could go straight up the garden wall, tree trunks etc, a quite unequal contest.

If anything the cat was the more scared of the two.............but it was a bit of a softie.

Then you need one of these: She hasn't caught one - but she got some tail hairs once - and our squirrels are in great shape for the Olympic "Jump, Run and Climb".

Wife put Terror on her papers - to me she is Tara

Together with one of these (Rat Terrier), may not catch them but would have a ball trying!

Tara wants him/her to come over and play. My wife's Shin Zhu Toby is too much of a fuddy duddy for an Irish Shorty Jack Russell (well 1/2 but she is truly a Daddy's Girl in looks, personality etc).

:) Gaby loves to play chase - doesn't care who is chasee or chasor (sometimes spelling just has to go by the wayside).

Years ago before my wife got Toby some friends went on vacation and we kept their dog (sort of a miniature gray hound looking dog) for 2 weeks - Tara was about 10 months old. When they got back and picked up "Pumpkin" (she was orange/yellow) they said when they arrived home she ran straight to her favorite couch and except to eat, drink or potty slept for 3 days. Tara had worn Pumpkin to exhaustion.

Now she is 10 years old and rests a lot more - but goes at warp 9 when playing etc.
