I have 3 Stoney RX100’s. The mark III, IV and VII. They all have fill flash, very useful mode. The VII is 1 stop slower at 2.8, but compensated with a more powerful stabilization than the III or IV or V. THE VII has eye recognition and tracking that is truly a game changer. For travel the longer reach is going to be the one. The VII also now has an external Mic jack and with its 4K video is very close to my canon 5D4 just way more convenient. The rx100’s are small enough so that I always carry one. For selfies the flip over screen is amazing. And I only shoot in raw.

I typically shoot a DSLR and for my typical subjects (landscape, still life, macro with focus stacking) my DSLR and a tripod work very well. I have a family trip planed to Washington DC and want to bring a compact camera (small, no interchangeable lenses but must shoot raw, good in low light) My old compact, a Nikon Coolpix P7100 is a little old so I want a new compact and have narrowed down my search to the following two. Comments and advice welcome.

1. Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 VA (I don't want the RX100 VI or VII because of the loss of some low light uses.)

2. Canon PowerShot G5 X Mark II

I'll probably use the pop-up EVF a lot so any comments about usage / wear & tear of the EVF would also be appreciated.

Thanks

I own the Sony RX100 II because it has a hot shoe for my PROFESSIONAL flash unit.
The VA is also an excellent choice, I really like the pop up view finder and the auto fill flash. Metal construction and Zeiss lenses make it an excellent choice. I would also recommend a belt pouch for the camera allowing you to be hands free. It has magnetic closures and works great, and it is on sale, WOW.

I have both. The Sony is sharper; the Cannon is easier to use and slightly more versatile. They are both fine cameras. I just bought a Nikon Z50 and while it is bigger than the other two, I am very, very happy with it.

You will get suggestions based on personal use, favoring both.
I suggest you decide what is important to you, then make your decision.

Throwing my $0.02 worth in. I bought a used Panasonic FZ1000 G1 for travel. I paid $390.00 for it.

I just took some pictures, indoors, at a botanical garden in Richmond with very good results.
I know my 5D MK IV and Canon 100mm L macro lens would do better, however I didn't want to bring my kit.

I always shoot raw, except with this camera. The internal jpg files look as good as if I shot manual and raw, without the PP time.

Just a different perspective and option.

You will find the Sony fits a pocket better, the Canon has a greater zoom range.
FWIW, there is also the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX10 which has similar specs at a noticeably lower price point.

I love my m6. Can blow up to 13x19 and looks as good as my FF and crop sensor. Slips in my pocket and I forget I have it.

I have been using various Sony rx100 models since the first one came out (the original, the III, the V, and now the VI). I haven't really used the Canon model you are looking at although I am a big fan of Canon gear generally. I like the Sony compacts for a number of reasons. They really do fit in a pocket. They are capable of producing very sharp images. They are durable (a friend dropped my original on the marble floor at Hearst Castle--it was scratched up but always worked flawlessly; I climbed Mt Whitney with it and got stuck in a snow/rain storm at the top, but it survived the weather). The evf works fine; I never had any problem with it on any of the models I bought though it has gotten better on the newer models. I like the ability to control the camera, but it does ok on P when I hand it to friends. I will say that the V was my least favorite of all of these, mostly because I kept getting it in a mode where it wanted to take multiple shots at the same time and it didn't seem that much better than the III to me--though I think the AF was improved. I got the VI because I felt that the lens on the others didn't give me enough reach. I mostly use the camera outside in somewhat extreme conditions so the speed of the lens was never much of an issue. It does pretty well inside and I have some great night shots with it too.

As with any camera, what is best for me may not be the best for you. It sounds like the V will serve you better given your interests, but for me, I have been very happy with the longer lens of the VI (and I guess the VII is even better). Good luck with whatever you get. They are all fine cameras.

They’re not compact/pocket cameras.

They seem to have more in common than differences

In considering a compact to buy myself, did a lot of YouTube watching on the comparisons of the two. Canon G5Xii gets my vote.

Could you give us a few of the key deciding factors?
