Hoggers,
Any recommendations pls?
Also any location recommendations for photographing seals and/sea lions beside La Jolla Cove and the Children’s Pool area?
Many thanks

We just returned from La Jolla. I'm unsure about La Jollaa cove but the vantaqe points for the seals are fairly limited
1. From the sidewalk benches between the pool and the street.
2. From the breakwater seawall that encloses the pool where the seals congregate. Be prepared to get wet and to protect
your gear from Salt Water if there is a sea running and the tide is mid tide or above. The odd waves may splash well
above the level of your head at times when on the breakwater. There seems to be no pattern or rhythm for the timing
of the big splasher's
3. only during the hours when people are allowed onto the seal's beaches is it permissible to share the beach with seals
and even then there are distance restrictions.
4. Seagulls will approach you if you are seated as in No.1 and are not too boisterous. Make sure your gear has close
focus capabilities for those startling shots of a seagull's eye from about 18 inches
5. The pelicans seem to be in breeding plumage at this time with bright yellows and reds in their bills and sides the head.
Shots of squadrons of pelicans as they glide by overhead will tax your fast focus camera and it's exposure metering as
well as your ability to pan with them but the shots that work are well worth the effort and frustration.
BTW. I've not seen Sea Lions at the childrens pool, only Harbor Seals, birds of various kinds and humans
BTW 2: The childen's pool, were the seals congregate is right below the lifeguard headquarters . The lifeguards protect the critters from humans as well as safeguarding human life
Perhaps the attached photos will give you some idea of the layout of the place and it's photo opportunities
