Great photos! You really captured the action in those. Love the facial expression in #2.

Thank you I appreciate it! I love sports photography and getting those facial expressions are a huge piece of the athlete's story...

Our son wrestled in High School and refereed for years afterwards! So, of course I found these to be very enjoyable!

That is great and I can tell that you know there aren't many opportunities for photographers to see let alone get a shot like that one... which is the main reason I wanted to share it Thank you - Jim

This particular shot was at 70mm FL (105mm adjusted for crop lens) however I always try to fill the frame leaving just enough room to correct vertical/horizon alignment and crop.

I zoom in and out depending on their location/distance from me to try to keep them centered since it has the least vignetting, barrel distortion, and is that lens' sweet spot when it comes to sharpness

Thank you

These are from the Varsity wrestling match a couple of days ago and as you can see there was one bout that truly was action packed. Its not common to get shots like that and wanted to share the love because they were so fun to take.

Enjoy...

Nice jcspics. Great comp and you filled the frame quite nicely. Post more when you can. Thanks

Tom

Good call and sorry for leaving it out.

Nikon D7200
70-200mm f/2.8 VR G
f/2.8
1/250th SS
ISO 1600
-2 Exposure Bias

I was sitting on the court at about a 45 degree angle to get the best POV

Hi. First - great shots. Cannot believe #1. Spectacular.

In regards to your settings, I am curious about the -2 Exposure Bias (assume compensation). The scene looks fairly averaged and balanced. Lots of middle tones and average light. The gym seems a lot like the local school BB venues I shoot. Your resulting exposures look great, but I would not have though they needed -2EV (two stops darker). What were you seeing โ€œthrough the lensโ€ that made you make this change?

Thank you, Paul! The next time I'm going to up the ISO to 3600 and make the SS 1/500th which should remove the motion blur I'm seeing. - Jim

Yes do up the ISO a little, try 2000 then 2500 before you go to 3600. I would definitely get the speed up, 500 is pretty slow. I shot these with 85mm 1.8. Most shot at ISO 1250, some at 2000. 1/640. Just try a little nat a time so youn don'y go too far and get discouraged. Like I said before nice comp and crops. This was only my second try at wrestling, I love it though (at least high school and collage) real wrestling. Thanks post more when you can.

These are great photos. Not sure who took the second set by the comments. Just wondering a couple of shots look like girl wrestlers, or are they just guys with lots of hair? Great action!

I was surprised to see girls going head to head with boys at the match but you're right they are putting in some work too. Love the little smile he's got right before the take down move...
