Hey Bubble, sorry with your Sony disappointment. Just a thought? I always carry my pocket cameras in my Shirt Pocket (preferably ones that button) rather than in my pants. (I also don't carry my iPhone in my pants pocket, either.) I have always felt that there is a lot less opportunity for damage in my shirt pocket than in my pants. Just a thought.

thank you for not giving me a writing lesson,, for all that replied , let me explain and introduce myself. , i am an ex-oilfield worker, worked there 30 yrs until i had a crushing injury to the right wrist, that took me out. in the state of texas ,if you qualify and have over 15% you can be retrained for a new career, i ended up taking nursing to get into prosthetics ,while in the oilfield, i had a crew of 6'2,+, 300# 's that i took care of.most were bigger and taller than that. men out there are hard and if you say the wrong word can get into an argument very quickly. to let off steam i hunted and fished,, but after 30 yrs its hard to change what you learned, now going into school at 52 was a big change english was my biggest down. sentence structure will always be a factor .still suffer with spelling,, thanks for spell check !!. i do welcome any help,, but i am not looking for lessons on grammar if you want to write , write, if you want to criticize will that you prerogative .. i look at the d500 i think the tg-6 is probably getting more of a nod, it will probably fit better in a pocket.. that's the problem,, it stays in my pocket all the time in the city or out when i am hunting or what ever... thanks for all your help..

Even a camera like the TG-6 Tough will lead a questionable life in a pants pocket when sharing it with a set of keys and and a multi-tool. Pressure from sharp, hard metal edges and points are going to damage a camera. Controls can be damaged, and so can the rear screen. Constant pressure from these objects pressing on the camera can damage it’s waterproofness. If you want to carry a camera in your pocket, remove those other things and put them in a different pocket. Or carry the camera in a belt pouch. We all value our cameras. They’re tools and they’re fine instruments, and they all represent an investment of money. The W350 is a fine camera, but it’s not going to stand up to the kind of abuse it’s subjected to in that pants pocket. But I don’t believe it’s a piece of junk, although that’s what it ended up being. You may have just been lucky that your Olympus didn’t fail. And it doesn’t mean that another of the same model will fare as well. Do treat your camera with respect and it will reward you with great service and fine pictures. Good luck to you.

Buy an Olympus TG-6 ($379), and call it a day.

If you break that, you’re the problem.

If you look at the things that have broken, you'll see somewhat delicate parts and materials. If you insist on carrying it in the same space as a set of keys and a Leatherman multitool, you need to expect that the things that can break, will. That is regardless of brand. Not everything is built like a Timex.

I can see a dent in the metal around the lens protection blades - that camera got a heck of a whack or constant pressure from something with a point/corner.

You say it is carried in a pants pocket? And the old camera was bigger. There are two thoughts - the bigger camera probably didn't move around much and took up more space so less other stuff in the pocket with it - do you also keep other stuff in the same pocket? Are the pockets on the pants the new camera is carried in at the same level as the ones you usually carried the old camera in? You could be bumping stuff with the pocket that before would hit higher or lower and not impact the camera. And there is age, I find I stand differently sometimes, tend to lean on stuff more and in different ways. My new car has edges in different places that put pressure on my right leg, knee and hip and therefore the stuff in my pockets or on my belt. Same for the seat belt, this one goes right over my cell phone pouch so I have to be careful to slid it under the pouch on my belt to prevent damage to the phone.

I carry my little pocket zoom in a shirt pocket (or jacket)* - the right breast pocket and there is nothing in the pocket with it - but probably some pocket lint - I had some of that work its way in several years ago and had to send it off to service to be removed. That can get in those little protection blades - but here I would say it is that dent in the casing which puts pressure on the blades and prevents proper movement. As to the battery door, smaller camera = room for the door to pop open if the catch snags when the camera shifts around and then the door gets pressure etc and damaged as the camera continues to shift.

*Except for dress shirts or uniform shirts for the operations department of the railway museum I belong to all of my shirts have two pockets - if not, I don't buy them.
Notebook, pen, little flat remote for the house alarm in the left pocket and camera in the right pocket. All my jackets either have two outside breat pockets or the inside pockets made for wallets etc - if the jacket has an outside right breast pocket my camera goes there - if not it stays in the shirt pocket - slower to get out but protected.

Just went back and read the stuff posted since I composed this - keys and leatherman in the same pocket = well that accounts for the dent and probably the unlatching of the battery door allowing movement and damage. Either go over to nothing else in the pocket or better yet a shirt or jacket pocket with flap & button/zipper/strong velco.

My pocket camera was first bought in 2008, 12.1 mp, 12x to 300mm equivalent Leica lens. Other than the lent problem it is still working.

Here is something you might try with your next camera. Give it a dedicated pocket. My iPhone always goes into a pocket by itself. Never with keys or a pocket knife or anything. Nothing fragile can stand up to getting squished in a fall against something unforgiving like a knife. I think the resiliance of your last camera is only luck, and it should have fallen apart too. I hate the blades they put on little cameras. Always the first thing to go. It would be better to find a camera with nothing in front of the lens. Less chance of hurting the lens than trashing those blades.
One pocket, one camera. Nothing else.

Before you further address your camera issues, you would be well advised to take a remedial course in English grammar, spelling, and syntax. If you reread your post, do you see any problems? It's an unnatural disaster.

I have a Sony just like yours, but mine is called a "Travel Camera", not a Pocket Camera. I've had great luck with it -- even the time I fell in a creek and submerged it. I broke a finger on the hand holding the camera, but the camera still works fine (after I dried it out in a box of rice), however my finger is still numb three years later. I also have an Olympus "Tough" camera -- a TG-870. Its pictures are not as good as the Sony but it's the one I take whitewater rafting . . . or carry in my pocket. It's built for that sort of abuse and takes it well. My father was always quick to stop me when I did something like trying to open a paint can with a screwdriver . . . or use one to stir the paint. "Son," he'd say, "there is a tool for every purpose."

Who, cares? (besides you) I understood him and this is a photography forum with people from all over, all languages, all walks of life and all education levels. Then there are typos - which I mostly now ignore since it is the web and doesn't really matter.

We are not handing out PhDs in English spelling and grammar here but doing photography and cameras.

I am a retired teacher and it took me a long time to get over correcting people all the time. Now I only do it if their mistakes cause confusion or misunderstanding.

Who gave you the right/power to criticize and try to embarrass the man? (if he cares about your opinion)

And I just went back and read the posterss who are having a fine old time critiquing the man's grammar and spelling instead of addressing his problem + those who just wanted to put him down for how he carries and treats the camera with NO EFFORT to discuss the issue, offer help or recommend other - tougher - cameras. I think my quick count was 7 language critics and 4 bashers - some with multiple posts and even to each other in a "Mutual Admiration Society".

My very uncharitable thought at this moment = BUZZ OFF and "golf, foxtrot, yankee". (60 Army radio phonetic - each letter is the first of a word of a 3 word phrase not used to people you like at the moment)

Low self esteem is often the culprit causing this type of behavior.
