Cool photo. Looks like many of the railroad ties are gone...or buried..

Nice shot. Ladder yards aren’t very high on the track maintenance priorities list apparently.

Very nice shot! Speaking of RR ties -- yes they deteriorate over time although I think in this instance they have just been covered up -- most likely these trains haul a lot of coal or grain that could spill from cars and cover the ties. So when it comes to deteriorating ties, why don't they make them from plastic --- the hardened kind like the Mattel building blocks. With all the plastic waist in the world, this would be a good way to help the environment and keep plastic out of landfills.

Here’s some info on that.

Thank you! That was very interesting and while I read the whole article, I was quite lost when they began throwing up the formulas for stiffness and expansion. Glad to see this is being done and while there are shortcomings in plastic presently, I feel sure someone somewhere is looking for a solution that will make plastic ties more universally acceptable. The answer might be in making a hybrid tie that would sandwich a layer of aluminum between two layers of plastic. By varying the thickness of the aluminum, they could better control the flexibility and expansion of the tie. Anyway thanks again for the article -- I'm encouraged that the ties are made from recycled materials and that they have advocated taking ties that need to be replaced and grinding them up to recycle the material again.

Whoever laid those rails was truly an artist at heart at least. Nice prospective.
