If I have to answer the last line only, then my answer is "No". They all are what they are, "famous".

"Overrated or disappointing photographically"? If it is so, the failures are by the photographer, not the location.

Also, a matter of opinion... Have you seen Plymouth Rock?

I came away pondering on how they were able build that portico while fighting off the savages and staving off that starvation. And they must have kept chiseling away at that rock until they got that "1620" just right. That would account for the rather diminutive pebble that was left.

Also, Yale locks were prevalent at Plymouth Village.

Yet, it qualifies as "Famous".

I knew what to expect when I visited the area.

Thanks for the tip about the West Mitten shadow at Monument Valley! That is very cool!
We love Monument Valley! I can not imagine anyone being disappointed about that location! Additionally, it has unbelievable sunrises, sunsets, and super dark skies at night! It is an amazing photographic destination (especially with a Navajo guide)!

You must be very short. His humor went clear over your head.

And I missed the Mayflower II by being three weeks early. Sigh.

My mentor told me this story.

A young photographer was hiking into an area when he encountered an older photographer hiking out. The young guy asked, “Well, did you get the shot you wanted?” The old guy replied, “No. I got the shots I discovered.”

The point being that it’s important to not let our expectations prevent us from seeing what is actually there.

Thank you for mentioning the West Mitten shadow. That was a very fun discovery. One of my favorite parts of vacation photography is meeting some of the same people at the next photo spot...in this case at Canyon de Chelly.

A good part of photography isn't about camera operation issues, it's all about the making lemonade part. I think the OP is on a fools errand.

OK....I have changed my mind...Monument Valley is definitely underrated! 😊😊

Interesting. My wife and I were talking with friends over dinner about Trevi Fountain last night. Of course we were disappointed with the crowds but my wife was disappointed by the fact that, with all the shops and vendors around the fountain, it was more like a bazaar atmosphere.
As to foot bathing, there were many different police groups around the fountain when we were there in 2002. I’m surprised there weren’t any giving fines or arresting people doing that.

The regulations barring wading and such just went into affect last year.

Sometimes people can be "disappeared" by using a LONG exposure (ND filter needed) or by taking several pics over time and using layers in pp.

True. But these were MOBS and encircling the fountain. I did do long exposures in Venice, and that did work. Thanks.

d2b2 is NOT kidding! We went to Italy in November for the first time. I was looking forward to photographing sights such as the Trevi Fountain. The whole city is a zoo; hundreds of tourists blocking every angle. The only way I could get a halfway decent shot was to spend hours in Photoshop taking out as many people as I could and/or cropping.

What you need to do is get a really dark ND filter, small aperture, ISO as low as it will
go and about a 30 second exposure... just so long as the people keep moving they are
invisible.

This was shot at peak (evening) period with thousands of
people and cars moving through the frame.

Agreed! I did that in Venice and it was effective. The fountain was a different story because people sat for hours with the selfie-sticks and rarely moved. Dawn would offer better opportunities.
