Great shots Sherwood. I have all the other species at my place in the woods in Lebanon but no Sapsuckers. We had them on my family farm in Montville but I only ever saw them on the old apple trees.

I seem to be seeing more and more Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers (descriptive and funny name), it's great to see these colorful little Woodpeckers as they eat the fall berries or drill small wells to drink the sap. One is immature. I appreciate those who take the time to view and make thoughtful and honest comments. All my bird and nature photos are taken in South Eastern Ct. most with a Canon 7D Mark II or 5D Mark IV and Canon 100 to 400II THANK YOU

love your bird pictures, whistletown...they are beautiful.

Those are wonderful photos, #3 the most wonderful. Woodpeckers are my favorite birds. I had almost forgotten about the YBS as none have been posted during my 9-month membership. Used to see one in Captiva Island, FL drilling all those little sap holes into the tree trunks. Thanks for this wonderful post.

Great great shots. Never seen one of these in Northern Mass. This will get me on the lookout. Thanks.

I love birds, but this particular bird is probably one of the most destructive bird around. The hole-drilling aspect of their foraging will totally kill Oak, Maple and Birch trees up to about 6" in diameter. I hate the little buggers.

All three are good. Number three is the best of the bunch. It conveys the sense and feeling of winter - something hard to do without appearing bleak.
