My experience at OCC in the Nov / Dec timeframe is you have the place pretty much to yourself, even on a weekend. The first 50-yards from the entrance can be overwhelming with some of the 'best' vehicles arranged there. Try to force yourself to move on if you spend an hour here initially. You'll get a lot more unique images if you move away from where everyone initially shoots. I've done both tripod and hand-held. It can be easier to sit / knee for the low-angle shots with an IS / VR-enabled lens that to lower the tripod down to that low-level. The tripod tends to work better for the macro-details or shooting into the shadows inside the cars.

Thank you to all who contributed their advice and ideas to my trip to Old Car City !! I had a great time and came back with too many photos. (Is there ever too many - NO !!). I flew down on a Thursday morning and arrived at OCC about 2:00pm and shot until closing at 4:00. Checked into my hotel just down the road and went to supper at Applebees. Next morning (Friday) I was there at 10:00 and shot until 4:00 again. Saturday It was raining very hard and I decided not to shoot in the rain as it was really coming down and I had a later flight home ahead of me. I visited the Southern Civil War Museum in Kennesaw and shot pictures of the locomotive "General" from the "Great Locomotive Chase" there. I wanted to get the waterwheel at Berry College, but it just raining too hard.

It was a fun trip and I plan to go back again later next year. You can view some of my images here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/garycarlson/ ...Once again thanks to my UHH friend who offered advice !!

"Backgrounds are always the big problem" ???

Did you review OCC's web site ? Zero problem.
All the videos and stills include plenty of it, all
very consistent with the OCC theme.

If you just meant that backgrounds in general
can be a problem for all photographic works,
sure thaz usually true. But if you haven't seen
the OCC site, take a look. No problem there :-)

I would not want to use a tripod for something like this. Too much chance for it to be toppled by passerbys, and for most attendees, it's just plain inconsiderate.

There are 36 acres there and I was one of six people on the property on both days. Using a tripod was definitely not a problem in any area of the property !!! Seldom was anyone else withing 100 feet of me unless we got together to chat about one of the 4000 vintage cars. Using a tripod is a must for me in taking multiple shot HDR images !!
