In the fall, there is a beautiful cottonwood tree you can see on the Indian guide photo trip. When I was last there in December a few years ago, the guide said October was the best month for such fall colors. Given weather changes, I would ask the photo guide companies what month they would recommend to increase the chances of getting the best fall colors.
Once at Monument Valley, drive to Canyon de Chelley, to see all of their cottonwoods in fall colors.
Going to Colorado this fall but wouldn't hesitate to return to MV in future. I haven't been to Canyon de Chelley--that would be a 'must see' next time I go to Arizona. And with your input, I would be sure to schedule in October since I love autumn colors best.
