Copy VHS tapes to DVD-BluRay

Is anyone doing anything as far as copying their VHS tapes to digital? I'm cleaning out some of my old tapes and would like to have them digitized, but most of the places that do it are charging $15-$20 per tape, and I don't like the idea of mailing them to someone.

I still have a VHS player and looking on Amazon there a number of things offered to do the job but I don't know if they are any good.

If I can find something that really works well, I'd be interested in offering the service to the public and getting a little cash flow over the winter.

I have a VHS and DVD player combined in one unit, that I bought 10 years ago. And I own a Blu-Ray DVD player as well. I'm comfortable with that. No way I pay those high priced transfer digital fees.

Not sure, but can't you hook up the VHS player through the TV and copy it onto a recordable DVD player? I've never tried it, but I thought it could be done.

This topic has been discussed a number of times on UHH. Do a search of "VHS Tapes to DVD". Here is a thread that mentions particular machines/ways.

I don't know how to deal with blu ray as I only ever used a blu ray player and not recorder. I don't see the need for blu ray unless you have DVHS tapes. I can transfer the video from my DVHS VCR to my computer via firewire and then burn the DVD. Somehow I can only transfer the VHS/SVHS tapes and not DVHS tapes.

I copied my VHS to DVD many years ago. I have a Panasonic unit that works great. Many used and some new units are listed on eBay.

You can find some new units on Amazon. Worth the price? Depends on how many you need to do.

No need to copy VHS to Blu Ray. It's overkill, and there are currently no dedicated units to make an easy transfer. You'd have to capture the video on a computer and then burn the discs.

I use Pinnacle Studio 21. Did all of my daughter's tapes, (VHS-C, DV and VHS) thru Pinnacle. Easy transformation from one source to other. Can put slides in there too. Gets rid of unwanted gliches. (Sorry about spelling, age (74) stroke in 1995 and other things.)

VHS tapes are an analog format, and dvds are a digital format. Not compatible unless you use an analog to digital converter. They are built into those copying recorders.

I've used something like this to copy many VHS tapes.

I use Easier Cap. Simple to hook up, plugs into USB port. Cheap $10-$20

Digital converter is what the TV is acting as if he is inputting from VHS player and outputting to DVD recorder.

Another one, Pinnacle Dazzle. Still have one after many years, used it for duping Beta, VHS and 8mm tapes of my kids growing up. Put them on a DVD, don't waste a BluRay DVD. Or capture them in some digital mode like AVI and put them on a CD.

I captured my digital tapes as AVI. The files are huge. MP4 is far more compressed. I burned all of my VHS to DVD, but my digital tapes were converted to files that I can watch on my computer or through my computer to my TV. I don't really see a need for DVDs except for any that I already have.
