Reading you response, I couldn't help but think, why not add the totally automatic shot that the camera makes at the same time as the original exposure. The camera is smart enough to do raw plus jpeg, why not make it so that you also have one the camera picks? If anything like HDR, some part of the image could be used to enhance the picture more. I'm sure I'm missing something here, but I'm also thinking out loud to see if it goes any place useful.

That's a good idea too! Set your camera with totally manual settings as you want them to be, and also duplicate the image like the camera would do if it was in auto...It wouldn't even have to be HDR...just the camera's auto settings...then you could also see who was smarter with each shot..you or the camera...:-)
You really started some thinking here!... If the manufacturers of some of the best cameras get wind of this thread...I bet we don't get none of the credit...lol

I'd like to know how to do this with one shutter press, so that it all happens at the same time. I don't know how to alter the cameras programming. I know magic lantern does a number of things the manufacturers leave out, but I don't think this is one of them.

If they made a camera that could take the perrrrrrfect picture, no matter what you did, where's the fun gone then? And there would be no point in competitions any more, since everybody's picture would be perrrrrrrfect. I like having to make the decisions and getting them right some of the time - although I wish it was mostly! If someone offered me the "song-and-dance" camera that was guaranteed to take perrrrrrfect pics every time, I wouldn't want it: I like being complimented on the very few that I do get right !

:-D

When I was younger, you could read interesting things in comics and read fantastic stories in graphic novels, or sci-fi books from the library. Vehicles that hovered, robotic helpmates and so many other things.

As it relates to photography, what kind of things are possible that don't really exist in our cameras, because of some reason or another? I always thought 35 mm was the standard and that it would be again when digital matured enough. By now, full frame should have been common in point and shoot, and much better systems available for those willing to spend a bit more.

I wonder why things like accurate white balance is left to someone who will use a grey card, or take the time to do a custom white balance.

I wonder why focus is still a major problem for many photographers.

I wonder why exposure is still a long way off from being consistently accurate.

The I turn my eye toward the future, and wonder, just what we would create to make what we consider expensive delicate equipment that we love to use and tinker with, seem like children's toys. Cameras still don't compare to our own eyes. If we could go beyond the common, into an amazing future, just what and how would we build it?

What capabilities can we make our cameras able to achieve? Our sciences may still be too immature to answer that, but should our desires and imaginations fall short too? Yes, I'm thinking out loud again. I shouldn't otta do that do, should I?

Those scifi movies showing holographic image reproduction might be nice. I know they have that now but not affordable enough for the average person and the equipment would fill a garage.
Or how about occular implants that photograph what you see? Just imagining what the future has in store is a wonderful thought exercise. Just don't make it your only exercise or you'll never get to see any of it materialize.

Bluetooth MP3 player, cell phone.

It's almost impossible to predict what the future will hold. We tend to think of minor improvements to what we already have. Who would have predicted digital calculators, digital cameras, MP3 players, iPods, etc? Even autofocus would have sounded like sci-fi a few years ago.

I'm patient enough to wait and be surprised by what comes next. And then order one from Amazon with two-day delivery.

I think, thinking out loud is a good thing. I also think the future has arrived & will continue to arrive each day as we evolve. I am 75 years old & have witnessed the future every day of my life. My mother gave me a Kodak camera when I was 14 & I have watched & have been involved in that evolution ever since. What a beautiful experience it has been.
Keep thinking out loud, That's where ideas are born.

How about a camera that you could set your vision to. So that when you auto focus it would focus to your vision capabilities.

Maybe it's a contact lens camera that stores images to an external "virtual cloud". When activated you blink your eyes and the shutter releases. So basically there is no camera body.

Yeah, Who knows what the future of cameras will bring. There are many frequencies in the electromagnetic spectrun, one of which is light that registers in our film or digital photos.

Canon made an especial infrared sensitive DSLR camera for those of us who would take astonomical photos that was great. Since discontinued, we can still take asto-photos with our film and digial cameras.

Cameras will evolve until we can capture most everything of the electromatic spectrum. Heck, NASA and others are doing this with their telescopic cameras on orbiting satillites.

Our consumer cameras will continut to evolve and I donno what the next generation of cameras will be capable of, but hold on for whatever comes out next!

Good questions, PhotoStar, That's how progress, that is better 'things' come about. As a physicist, I've tried to answer a few good questions.

all kidding aside, i wish they would make a 35mm digital back you could attach to say my Nikon n-90, or even my FE so that I could use them without film. N-90 is still one of the best cameras with a large bright viewfinder that Nikon ever made. while i am at it, since retro models sell like hotcakes (Fuji x series, the Olympus omd-5) how about Nikon releasing a retro dslr shaped like the original f photonic with the angeled head(still the best looking camera), and a range finder dslr version of the original Nikon s range finder. make either with no menus everything on buttons and dials. I wish Nikon would make their lenses look like the original and AI versions again, metal with depth of field scale in bright colors, well crafted and designed. Those nikor lenses are still the best looking and most durable. i wish Nikon would make a dslr for people with big beefy hands and fingers, who don't think a 5 pound camera is heavy. I would like to be able to really grip a camera without it feeling like a toy.
