Hey everyone! Interested in hearing your thoughts about these lenses. I use Canon 7d Mk ii for wildlife and I know it’s going to be sharper than either of these but I need some reach and I’m considering one of these for some situations. I will be keeping my 100-400.

Thanks,

Danny

Objective tests -- if done right -- are better than opinions. Have a look at the-digital-picture.com for side by side comparison of two lenses (be sure the camera is the same, or at least sensor size is the same), opticallimits.com and lenstip.com for MTF50. (And watch out for tests with old cameras like Canon 50D with relatively low resolution)

I concluded that the lens are close to the same, but Sigma Contemporary is a little less money. I've been battling with a Tamron 18-400 that had been in 3 times. Last service was to disassemble and clean then calibrate, but it still had a problem at 18-35mm that couldn't be corrected with the tap-in console. A replacement should be sent today, but I've about given up on Tamron. Sigma 18-300 and 150-600 arrive today and I'm just hoping I get decent lenses.

I went through this evaluation myself back in the summer and after reading about a gazillion comparative reviews I came to the conclusion that optically the Tamron G2 was slightly better but mechanically it was considerably better…or at least that was the average of what I got out of the reviews. I can say that the G2 on my D7500 takes outstanding shots.

All very interesting. I purchased the G2 because I thought it better than the Sigma C and less expensive, lighter than the better sealed Sigma Sport. This seems to confirm my expectations.

I liked my G2 once tuned. Here is a quick shot I made at about 500 feet handheld (600mm). Subject in the first photo reminds me of a camera dealer I met years ago. The second photo is of our "pet" free ranging bluebird at about 30 feet and handheld.

I have the Tamron SP150-600 G2. I rented the Sigma Contemporary and Sports lens and the Tamron. The Tamron had a much better build quality. The picture quality is excellent as are the Sigma lens although both a some areas where vinaigrette showed but all were fixable in post if needed. The deciding factor is that Tamron lenses purchases in the US come with a full 6 year warranty.

I have the sigma and I love it. Definitely heavy. Took great wildlife shots hand held.

My wife and I are nature photographers and both of us have our own Tamron 150-600 g2 lens. We get very sharp images at all focal lengths. The focus is fast. She shoots with a Nikon D7200 and I shoot with a Nikon D850. We are very pleased with the images. The lens can be locked so there is no creep

May I digress?

Just like many of you, I chose the Tamron 150-600 G2 for my D850 after side-by-side comparisons with the Sigma and Nikon 200-500.
They're excellent...but they ARE a bit heavy and awkward!
Just for fun I tried the NIKON P1000 as an "always have with me" substitute. I've posted other images with this camera... But, since this discussion was ongoing, I ran out in the backyard and took a shot I COULDN'T HAVE with the "bigger glass". The shot is of an Osprey, in the top of a fir tree from about 200 yards away. It's really dark (you can see the last rays of the sun lighting the tips of its feathers on the far side. This image is at 3500mm.
Yes...3500mm. You might just consider one of these cameras as an addition to your arsenal. I don't know if even the D850 could have enlarged a 600mm image as well as this. SOOC

PS....i dont think THIS image could compete with the quality of what we get with our D850s and Tamrons...but for small prints or online posting, its better than missing the shot! 😇
