It's amazing that American Airlines can take the Dreamliner, and turn it into an 11 hour torture chamber. It can, economy seats on what is otherwise a great plane, are so tight that there is simply no way to get comfortable in them.

They're selling transportation, not comfort.

Tony Ryan, MD of European discount airline Ryanair, once asked Boeing to develop a plane with a 'standing room only' area. Ryanair operates on a 'flying bus' concept, so that may not be as outlandish as it sounds.

Tony also asked Boeing to provide 'pay' toilets on his planes - 1 Euro a go. At the announcement, one reporter quipped he would only pay that if Tony's face was printed on the toilet paper. Tony shot back 'Great idea - do you want a job?'

It doesn't have to be that way. Since my retirement we only fly on personal business and are not required to use U.S airlines. Qatar Airways' economy seats in Boeing 777s,787s and Airbus 380s are roomy enough (though only just enough) for a jumbo wide-body like me.
