That is a good quote but knowing the govt., low bids are pretty high anyway.

Right. It's not like Walmart and Radio Shack were bidding. Most of those components are specialized and must meet stringent requirements. There was a scandal a few years back where some lab was buying parts from Radio Shack - and taking chances on quality. Glenn's comment is amusing but not realistic.

My father walked in a steel mill outside Pittsburgh. The specialty stainless it produced was used by North American Rockwell to build components for the Apollo moon flights. North American Rockwell built their R&D / fabrication facility next to the mill in the parking lot. The mill ran 3 shifts a day to produce the materials to be fabricated to go to the assembly facility.

Good times for community as employment was at record highs.
