getting old traveling light and using my Tamron 28-300 on a Canon 5D and a Canon 11-24 on my 7D. A small pack. Or don't take the 7D an take a 17-40 Canon lens.

Hey Mr H, what you'll see from everyone saying "24 to 70" is they're using essentially the same lens as your 18-55, just on full-frame sensors. The 18-55s from both Nikon and Canon are more than sharp enough for wonderful images. Keep shooting and having fun!

My most used lens is the Nikon 24-120mm F/4, which I use on the D750. It hardly ever comes off the camera, and with its great zoom range it pretty much does everything for which I need it for.

Someone asked this end-of-year question last year. I guess I get to ask for 2019. Filtering by 2019 as the shooting date, I get "20 lenses" in my LR catalog spread over 1587 images and three cameras, but that count is skewed by the use of extenders. The EF 300 f/2.8L IS II comes in as my #1 when the two extended configurations are merged along with the lens alone, totaling 408. That's 'keepers' in the catalog. The usage number is probably 3x to 4x that number in bursts at airshows.

I was surprised to see the EF 16-35 f/4L IS was the second most used in file count at 256.

I looked at the filters several times as just 1587 images for the calendar year seems surprisingly low. I know I shot less, but that's less than half the 2018 count for the same LR filters that returns 3675.

If you filter and count your images, what surprises did you find? Do you use your own usage data to plan to sell unused lenses / cameras? Or maybe, to change the lenses you'll use more in 2020?

I have accumulated five lenses over the years. The one that is my hard worker is my 28-135mm f3.5. It suits me fairly well with little complaint. Now is order of which I use less. I have a Rokinon 14mm lens. I mostly use it for street shots while walking down The Big Apple. I have a 28mm Tilt-Shift for architectural photos. I have a 70-300mm lens with a 1.4x multiplier.
Finally, I have a 500mm Mirror lens which I used for the recent Solar Eclipse. I don't carry that monster of a lens. Not because it is heavy, but that glass is bulky.
Happy Shooting!

The new Nikon 80-400g 4.5-5.6 on a d750 goes with me nearly every time I leave the house. Many options available but this is the most used.

CHG,

I am a victim of GAS! I have the following arsenal of lenese for my Canon 6DII and below is the approximate amount of times I use each one. I should probably sell those that are used infrequently, and only keep the ones used most often. There is much overlap, which ones would you suggest I keep, and which to sell?

Prime Lenses
Sigma 15mm f2.8 Fisheye - hardly ever used
Yongnuo 35mm f2.0 - used a few times per year
Canon EF 50mm f1.4 USM - used quite often
Canon EF 85mm f1.8 USM - for prtraits only, a few times per year
Sigma 105mm f2.8 OS Macro - most often for flower and insect photos in spring through fall

Zoom Lenses
Sigma 12-24 f4.5-5.6 EX DG HSM - hardly ever used
Canon 24-70 f2.8 L II USM - used most often
Tamron 24-135 f3.5-5.6 72mm - used most often
Tamron 28-300 f3.5-6.3 DI VC PZD - used only for vacations twice per year
Canon 70-200 L f4 IS USM - haven't used in two years
Canon 70-300 f4-5.6 IS USM II - used frequently
Sigma 150-600 f5-6.3 OS HSM - used for birding.

Over the many years that I have been shooting I have been collecting lenses. It is very possible that I have over a dozen of them. Experience has taught me that nobody needs so many lenses.
Introducing into my photography a few years ago the Olympus mirrorless system has increased my lens collection. I do not keep a record of my images but I know what I use more often.

Of all my Nikon lenses it seems that the 18-70 is what I use more often with my D7000 in spite of owning a 18-200 VR lens. The 28-105 is the lens that is most often used with my D610 followed by the 50mm f1.4 AI converted from the early 70's.
My 80-400 VR, first version sees little use along with the 70-300 VR. I am using more often my 12-24 f4 AF-S with the full frame than with the D7000.

When it comes to the Olympus system it is a mixed bag. The Panasonic 14-45 is used often along with the 40-150 kit lens. Landscape and portraits are shot with the Zuiko 12-40 f2.8 Pro.
