Some notes and observations for those unfamiliar with stacking
- the basic idea is get some photos together that are focussed at various points and build a composite
- you will need specialised optics to work at this magnification for best results; consumer macro lenses don't have the resolution. But you can make a start by reversing lenses
- reversed enlarger lenses work well, in particular high quality 6 element lenses
- microscope objectives are neccessary for above 5:1 to 10:1
- lighting is a particular challenge, along with its evil twin brother diffusion. I have 4 flashes round my subjects
- it's a lot of work, total time on many of mine is between 4 and 8 hrs
- zerene stacker is my personal software tool of choice, but I've seen great results with other packages too
- these are preserved specimens, live stuff doesn't tend to sit still. Relaxing, spreading and mounting are neccessary skills
- engineering/diy is also a neccessary skill because you end up needing to build a micro studio, invariably made from bits that you can cobble together from wherever. For example I'm building as we speak a lifting platform by re-engineering microscope bases, but I also have some other projects lined up for the winter such as a fibre optic flash pipes to bring light where I want, a motorised r/c universal stage and a cooling studio
- it's an enjoyable thing to do over the winter
WOW!!! i have never seen better stacks.tom

superb on top of fabulous. The best. You are the man.
Thank you, you're all very kind! With Winter approaching rapidly I'd hope to be churning out a few more... never enough time...
Nass, I'm a fan your work and I would like to ask about your equipment. How or where did you purchase your Mitutoyo Digital Micrometer base for your focusing rail? I looked at there catalog and didn't see it listed. I assume it is ready made for this purpose or did you build it?

Thank you for your kind comment! I'm not sure where this is coming from though, a mitu digital micrometer base?
That isn't something I have =)
