I have a Canon I9900 and am relatively satisfied with photos. What printer can I move up to for more professional photos? Am considering Canon 9500...comments
The Epson Stylus Pro 3800 is an excellent printer and will print up to 17 x 22. The ink cartridges are expensive... about $50 each (of 8) but last a Looooooong time.
Also look at the epson R1900 to see it it fits your needs... each ink cartridges (8) will cost from $11 - $14 each
I've got the Canon Pixma Pro 9000.....love it! Great Price too.
Cheineck ...What kind of printing do you do to warrant ink at $50 a cartridge? What is sooooo long?

Thank you for your reply and input...did look at the Canon. My budget is about $800 max . Printers are usually reasonable ...they get you for the ink .
Have been using Canon (9000 and now 9500 pro) and they have been sensational. The one problem I had was with a clogged
print head and Canon sent a new one with NO CHARGE, even though I was out of warranty (by a lot).
I usually print 16 x 20 on Epson Exhibition Fiber Paper, using a CMYK rip from Colorburst. I use the rip as I needed proof-ready prints when working as a graphic designer. I also create the matte in Photoshop as a separate layer, adding shadows for "depth". Saves a bunch as you can buy inexpensive frames and simply drop in the print already "matted. See attached example. The ink cartridges vary in longevity due to colors used. I usually get 6 months plus from each cartridge, printing about 10 large prints and 7 or 8 smaller (8 x 10) each week.
Forgot to mention---I think the printer sells for about $1,298, minus the rip (which you really don't need {about $600}). B&H in NYC has them in their printer lineup online.

Same here. Got my printer for $208. How can you beat that?
There are lots of good printers - just make sure you buy one thats mainly for photo printing.
While the mat created directly on the photo looks nice, a separate physical mat serves a purpose. It keeps the photo from touching the glass in the frame. Photo emulsion (or with digital technology, ink) can stick to the glass under certain conditions.
Your absolutely correct. The print with a printed "matte" must be mounted on foam-core or a similar support then spacers are added to keep the print from touching the glass.
