Thoughtfully, beautifully written paragraph.

Re your sentence I snipped, there are frequent conversations in For Your Consideration such as you describe. Sometimes one has to follow the thread for a page or more until the "main course" is delivered

People who aren't finding what they want should be pro-active and DO IT YOURSELF.

I also agree that showing examples in main discussion should be the norm, and I would also support the suggestion I saw last year about people being required to have a "Ten Best" page on UHH before being allowed to comment in discussions

The longer a thread stays active in main discussion the less I care whether it devolves. But as you saw, I get very cranky when the first response or several on first page are rude or irrelevant, making it that much more difficult to attract meaningful discourse.

Amen.

LOL, in my above use of "snip," I meant the sentence I quoted from your longer entry

Thank you, Martin - happy holidays!

Monochrome will capture the soul of an image if the colors aren't interesting , still color can produce interesting photos but B&W goes all the way to the soul + B&W can be more forgiving . It has been said when you shoot in color it only gets to the surface . So everybody commit on this subject .

To me its the opposite, the world is full of color and to replicate it in color goes to the "soul". I enjoy watching all the different colors in the world, it makes me happy!

You need courage to capture an image that no one has ever seen before.

That depends on what is being photographed.

This discussion has given me the resolve to shoot more in black and white, but in general I think it adds soul in some cases to shoot a n. B&W, but Rob's images of soul in others.

I was wondering who Rob is and how he got involved before I realized that was probably a bad autocorrect. 😜🤪

On the contrary, I love conversations about photography but with examples posted. As you stated about Adams, what a said affair if he only speculated. I'm more of a doer than talker. This post actually got me thinking more about my annual get together with the family for Christmas. I'm the grandpa that sits in the background with camera in hand. I use a telephoto lens and take down to earth candid shots of my kids, grand kids and other family members. I gift all the adults with photos after editing and sorting. It's a real pleasure when on occasion I see some that have been printed and hung in the homes. I have candid portraits of all of my tribe in B&W. No distractions, that moment is captured forever with freckles, wrinkles, expressions. They are my favorites. My oldest son is having a hard time with life, and I'm hoping to capture his soul in a photo this Christmas. Of coarse it will be B&W. If he keeps up at this rate he won't last another year. I won't talk about it and probably won't share that photo if capture, but I will try. The main reason I like photography is the effort involved. I recently traveled 600 miles to capture a scene I had failed two years ago to capture. It was, Nice, but not what I had hoped for. God willing and the creek doesn't rise, I'll go back to the location again and again until I achieve the perfect light for that photograph. You mentioned you enjoyed my photography, Thank you. I can promise those images were not captured the first time I tried. I would welcome a hardy discussion of capturing the essence, soul of a love one, but would also enjoy viewing an image that moved me........

Thank you for clarifying your view, Martin. I was misled by your comments into believing that you didn't think much of the topic raised by the OP and of photography discussions in general. And yes, I find your images astounding, especially the spiders!

Best wishes to you and family....

Black and white was truly wonderful in it's day. Leave it there. My eyes do not see in B&W, they see in color.

We've gone around the monochrome
- color issue a few times but I always find it an interesting topic. I love B&W but I also believe that content/subject is the most important aspect of a photograph. And some content is better in B&W, some in color. So it all depends.

👍👍👍 Good Answer, and Reasonable too

My old mentor sometimes said that B&W is more real than color. B&W allows the viewer to imagine whatever color they like.

You already said it, so it must be true.
