I had the problem with the meter on my Nikon Df on early March. The meter indicate underexposure no matter what. I talked to Nikon and they said to send it in but since I needed to use it I planned on sending it in after April 7. However, 2 weeks after the problem the meter started to work off an on for 2 days. After that it continues working until now. I know camera doesn't fix itself but sending it in with no symptom and Nikon may not do anything to it. Should I still send it in.

Having been an electro-mechanical technician for 30 years, I will tell you that it is a crap shoot trying to fix an intermittent problem if it never presents itself to the technician. You could very well send it in, pay the bench charge and not get it fixed. It would be better to wait until it starts failing again. If you have not seen the problem for almost a month, how are they supposed to find it?

That being said, there are sometimes intermittent problems that the techs have seen on other customer's cameras. If that is the case, they can apply the known fix even if it doesn't present. Can you call Nikon tech support and describe the problem to them. If they have a known fix, it's probably in a technical publication. If the don't have a known fix, then they can tell you that it's going to the tech's best guess.

Having been an electro-mechanical technician for 3... (show quote)

I understand you fully and I know that too because I am in the business of designing and fixing automated production equipment. I know there are many intermittent problem but if someone told me and I could not see it I can't really fix it. As for known issue I agree with you too but the problem that the Tech who I can call on the phone are not very knowledgeable. The guy told me that it's impossible for me to have problem with the meter if it works fine in live view mode.

Check NIKONUSA.COM website. You put in a repair request and they tell you where to send it.

An update. I had it fixed in March 2019. I shoot a video thru the viewfinder showing the camera pointing at the same scene yet the meter changes from underexposure to OK. It did cost me $400.
