Is Photoshop a "toy" program?

Most video shown today; movies, commercials etc, use some form of CGI in the production of those works.

Photoshop is an image processing program, not video and does a pretty good job of it.

I choose to agree with that assessment , Photoshop is not a toy.
For those who are interested, read up on the career of “ Alvy Ray Smith” and his contributions to the Hollywood CGI technology.

Bad news: when Atlanta was burning in Gone With the Wind, that was not really Atlanta. It was special effects.

And why is a special effect of Atlanta burning bad news?

It's not just a leap in software to produce amazing cgi.
They also shoot with 250k cameras .... it makes a BIG difference.

If you want the very best without cgi ... James Webb telescope ... which will be able to resolve a penny from 40 km away.

Watching today's movies are very unrealistic, car chases, etc. Movie studios must have huge editing prograns.

I have mentioned this before, Photoshop is an ADOBE Product, Adobe was developed at the University Of Utah, it is the go to product for the printing industry, not photography, although it is perfect for photography, it was developed over the years to seamlessly integrate several CGI software along with the printing industry, everything great about Pixar was also developed at the Uof U.
There are other software programs specifically designed for photographers that allow on the fly corrections because of digital cameras. Adobe is far from a toy company and software. Without Adobe, the printing industry would be back in the dinasour period of cut and paste mechanicals and professional type setting houses. And don't forget endless overlays with registration marks. Adobe changed the printing industry for ever more, and they continue to improve in all of their categories.

You can make any image you can think or dream of in Photoshop.

Relative to the CGI software & industrial-strength workstations needed for Hollywood-budget, feature-length movies, yes, Photoshop would be a 'toy' in comparison.

Movie studios use video editing software, Photoshop is principally designed for still photography and is a benchmark for still photography editing software.

I think the movie Bullet (Steve Mcqueen) was pretty close to appearing reality. Very little special effects proccessing I think.

Well, considering that movie is over 50 years old, most special effects were done in studio rather than processing.

I don't watch any "action films" because of the implausible, surreal actions. I gave up such with the martial arts films that showed impossible leaps, slow motion, etcetera. How about movies showing realistic actions instead of crap for 30 something juveniles who try to emulate that CRAP!

Apart from the camera being undercranked at 18 FPS the chase scene in
"The French Connection" was all real too.
The car chasing the train sequence was apparently done without permission from any authorities;
there was at least one prang that was not in the script and one of
those was with an every day unsuspecting motorist who was just driving to the bakery...
which remained in the film.

I once read it was the “King Kong” (1933) set that was the stunt double for the flaming Atlanta in “GWTW”.

Photoshop can do some awesome 3D modeling if one learns how to use the 3D functions.

Yes it can, but compared to what the advanced 3D modelling programs can do, Photoshop is fairly limited.

It would be sad to learn that I am no longer able to use toys proficiently.

Every time I go into Photoshop I'm flummoxed by the necessary workflow to make it do what I want. More so with the new iPad version. Because of this I use Lightroom for 99% of my editing. Making me even less capable at deploying Photoshop.

I am sure if I made Photoshop my primary editing tool I'd learn it. But at this point for me it is a very complex expert only tool...about as far from a toy as one can get.

Wait. You mean all those car chases are scripted and "shopped". Next thing you'll be trying to tell me star wars and Yoda "ain't real".
