Why not simply use the cable that likely came with your camera? That should work just fine whether you have a reader or not.

Because using a dedicated reader is faster and easier.

CF Express is the next generation after XQD. Nikon previously announced a still soon-to-be-released Firmware update for D850, D500, D5 and Z series to be able to accept the new cards. You MAY also need a new card reader. Best of luck.

Nikon Rumors expects Nikon firmware updates this Tuesday, but aren't sure if it will include the CFExpress update.

I presently use SD, XQD, and CF cards. That's enough variety for now.

Interesting. I wonder if they will still accept XQD after the Firmware update.

I seriously doubt they would want to PO all the people that already invested in expensive XQD cards.

Good point. But stranger things have happened. It might be good to wait a bit on installing the next firmware update.

One of my concerns as well. Here's to hoping that Nikon realizes how many un-important people (like both of us) they will p_ss off if they don't!

Seriously, it never occurred to me that it’s something I should worry about. It wouldn’t serve them to have a firmware update that REMOVES a capability.

Not really worried about this, just hoping that you are correct. I believe this update is due soon (before the end of the year). It seems that CF Express cards have been available in the last two weeks. We shall see.

Not sure why you think that...I only ever use the camera cable and it's so much quicker than having to remove the card, plug it into the reader and then download, remove the card and then insert it back into the camera you've already done twice as much as I need to do......I just plug the camera in and bingo done..I have two readers and found them both slower to muck around with than just one plug in cable. My PC programme auto reads my camera and I just drag and drop, a few seconds at most for a reasonable ammount of pics...50-100..
As for XQD cards, I'm pretty disgusted at Sony who have ceased production on their 32GB card...they have a new version coming out soon but I bet it will be 4-5 times the price. The 32GB card is already $140-150 over here...I've had one on order for a few months now. Found it on a camera shop's web site and after they took my money they informed me that card was discontinued. They did offer a refund but I'm hanging on to see what the new card is..

I have heard rumors that Nikon was going to produce XQD cards and I have heard that CFexpress is going to replace the XQD cards and be physically compatable with one another. In Nikon cameras, will that require firmware update? During black Friday and cyber Monday I was looking for a deal on 120MB card, nothing. So, before buying a Sony XQD card, I thought I would ask what is happening now and in the months to come. I don't need another card but nice to have insurance and flexability. I do like how fast they upload large files.

If your camera uses XQD why change?
You have several XQD cards for it so just keep using them.
They do not wear out do they?
Not sure what the big deal is.
New cameras use CFexpress and get CFexpress cards for them.
No problem.

I've used SD cameras forever. I ignored Fuji "film" when they used XD. Even my Kodak vintage DSLR has a SD slot alongside the CF slot. My vintage Olympus DSLR uses CF, but guess what? CF to SD adapter. XQD = the price you pay for using those huge FF monsters.

Also used in APS-C cameras, not just FF..my Nikon D500 uses both XQD and SD but the XQD is faster to suit the fast processor..10 frames a second continuous......
